What would happen if a horse threw off its jockey and the riderless horse won the horse-race?
May 21, 2019 | Curious non-jockey

There was a horse-race the other day where one of the horses threw off its jockey at the beginning of the horse race called the Preekness and the riderless horse finished the race nevertheless.

The jockey was a short little guy and that might have had something to do with him being thrown off. Maybe if the jockey was strong, tall and heavy, he or she would have held on?

Anyway, if the riderless horse went ahead and won the race, would it count as a victory? I'm thinking that without the additional weight of a jockey, the horse would have a bit of an advantage?

Am I crazy for thinking that?

In honor of that horse-race, I link to a song that is about horses

TRUE.

My late wife & I (in the early 1980s) used to breed/raise/course Afghan Hounds & one afternoon in 1983 we had a hound in a race of 6 other sighthounds when a butterfly flew across the course.

All six hounds made a “hard left turn” & ran off the course in hot pursuit of the butterfly.
Then other sighthounds got loose from their handlers & joined the JOYOUS chase.
Since butterflies don’t follow a planned course, there were any number of “changes in direction” & collisions between hounds. - Obviously to the hounds, it was all “great fun”, though some of the owners were having a “hissy fit” because their dog got “crashed into” or knocked down in the “rough & tumble” chase.
(Sighthounds all LOVE to chase anything that “looks interesting”. - Greyhounds ARE sighthounds.)
Spectators in the crowd (who didn’t have a “participant” in the chase) were soon howling with laughter.

This incident would have been even more amusing IF we owners weren’t still trying to “round up” hounds over 2 hours later.
(Our “Bounce” spent the ride home sound asleep with his head in my wife’s lap, as he had obviously had a great time & now just needed a siesta. - Fwiw, I didn’t nearly as much fun combing the burrs & other stuff out of his coat for hours, at home!!)

Easy. The horse is DQed as soon as it loses its jockey.

Even stupidly did not have THAT rule, they would be DQed for not carrying the same weight as before the race. There is weigh-in and weigh-out.

They do, almost invariably.

Sure, they can stop but they’re used to it and they often want to run with their type.

And BTW, look up NATIVE DIVER, one of the all-time greats, whose feats included 3Hollywood Gold Cups in a row. One of those HGCs included a horse who lost the jock. THAT horse actually won the race...beat Native Diver! But even in the call, he is ignored and often discussions of it ignore the horse finishing in front.

Riderless does not count... horse lost the weight it was supposed to carry.

I read that the jockey didn’t have one foot in the stirrup when the gates opened, so when the horse acted up -— he went plop.

But can you imagine if the horse HAD won?

At PT, for the fun of it, we had a lottery, and my horse made the win, after that disaster first race. But I was given two names and War of Will won the Preakness, Does that make me a double crown winner?

And that is the crux of the matter.

They weigh in and weigh out. Obviously losing 100 lbs would make for a very bad weigh-out.

Lol! Thanks for the wonderful story.

I hadn’t heard the term “sighthound” before.

It's not just a weight thing, although of course that would be huge, considering jockeys typically weigh around 100 pounds! It's simply the rules of the game. Gotta have a rider aboard, at least as the horse crosses the finish line, which then raises another good question.

What if, like we may see in an old comedy film, sitcom, or old-school cartoon, a rider falls off a horse, then somehow manages to get back on and guides the horse to victory, or any any part of the purse (2nd, 3rd, 4th), for that matter? Would the result stand? I'm guessing yes, it would.

I believe the rules, variant as they are, would require the rider AT ALL TIMES.

Again, the bottom line is weight. Losing 100 lbs even for a brief part is a huge advantage.

Sighthounds as opposed to scent hounds. They’re all in the Hound category in AKC.

I believe the rules, variant as they are, would require the rider AT ALL TIMES.

But assuming it is not in fact the case, imagine a scenario where, say, a small field of 5 or 6 horses are racing and one breaks down and several of the others crash into it and unseat their riders. Then one of the fallen riders gets back on his horse and completes the race, finishing in a money position, 1st, 2nd, 3rd, or 4th.

Similarly, on the gambler's end, you loose your *money*, game over. :)

What would happen if a horse threw off its jockey and dragged him across the finish line and won the horse-race?

It would be one for the record books.

Sighthounds include a BUNCH of different breeds of dog. = The sole things that they have in common is that they run game by SIGHT, rather than by scent/smell.

SOME of those breeds are: Afghans, Asian/Russian Wolfhounds, Basenghis, Borzois, Grand Griffon Vendeens, Greyhounds (several different varieties), Irish/Scottish Wolfhounds, Italian Greyhounds, Ibizan hounds, Lurchers, Pharaoh Hounds, Podenco Caninarios, Rhodesian Ridgebacks, Salukis, Scottish Deerhounds, Silky Windhounds, Sloughis, Thai Ridgebacks & Whippets.

Hoping that that helps. = Some sorts of sighthounds appear/act quite different than the way that other sighthounds look. = For example, Irish Wolfhounds look very different (and have a VERY different personality) than a whippet BUT both breeds are sighthounds.

Btw, our “Bounce” came back to “Mama” looking very pleased with himself, so he must have believed that he did well in the chase.
(The TRUTH is that you are wasting your time trying to CATCH a loose sighthound as even Usain Bolt, the Olympic sprinter, cannot run over 40MPH. = Afghans CAN “run down” a cheetah, as cheetahs have GREAT speed but only for short distances.)

An Afghan Hound in good shape can run “full throttle” for HOURS & furthermore a male/female pair (as they once were used for hunting in Asia) can “take down” & KILL a leopard.
