The next poet laureate could be from a black and minority ethnic (BAME) background, amid calls from poets for the new appointment to reflect multicultural Britain. The current holder of the position, Carol Ann Duffy, is due to step down from the 10-year role at the end of this month and her replacement will remain a royal appointment.

Diversity is a grand thing. So why stop with the UK poet laureate? Maybe the Windsors should just step aside and let one of these guys be the next king.

Exactly. If they feel this is the right thing to do, then just do it. Don’t announce it to give yourselves ‘points’ for your ‘progressivism’. It’s actually unfair to any minority person who is picked. They will have this hanging over their heads - even if they are the best choice. It’s quite pathetic.
