6.5 Creedmoor vs .308
Am Shooting Journal ^ | 3/27/2019 | J Blaha

Which is a Good Option as a SHTF Cartridge?
There are some great short action rifles available, some rifles being offered in 6.5 Creedmoor. There is another similar case, but not quite the same its the .308 Winchester. The 6.5 Creedmoor uses skinnier, lighter bullets and its faster downrange than the .308.

The 6.5 Creedmoor is very popular as a great selection for medium to long range (500-1000 yards) shooting. Which is why the military has incorporated this into some of their specialized rifles for long range targets.
Ballistic speaking, the skinny 6.5mm bullets perform exceptionally well, very closely matching the ballistic profile of a 300 Winchester Magnum, but with much less recoil and cost.

Its possible that for SHTF scenario the 6.5 Creedmoor is the better ballistic cartridge than .308 due to performance consistency. The 308 was designed in 1952 for a semi-automatic military rifle, while the 6.5 Creedmoor was designed in 2007 for better long range target performance in a bolt action rifle. Read the rest of this 6.5 Creedmoor vs 308.

I once had 3 of those Mauser .22 training rifles. Pretty weighty with a really heavy barrel. Extraordinarily accurate.

These particular ones were made by the French just after the war in the Mauser factory. One actually had the Mauser banner and the other two were identical but were stamped, MAB.

I needed money and sole them for about what I paid. I understand they have gone way way up in value.

RE: Kar98

The Mauser Karabiner 98k, a shortened version of the WWI Mauser Gewehr 98. The German Wehrmacht used the Kar98k throughout WWII. Bolt action, tough, reliable, chambered in 7.92x57mm. Very accurate, and hard-hitting round.

Outclassed by the semi-auto M1 Garand we were using.

Yeah, we’ve all got “the ones that got away”... sigh.

I had an Israeli Mauser Kar98 chambered in 7.62 NATO many years ago. Again, the Dumbass Software kicked in, and I traded it for something else...

I have a real love for the old bolt actions. Wood, steel... the way a Rifle should be...

What you said. I just did an inventory. I’ve got over a thousand .308 cases and a like amount of bullets. I have enough Winchester military pull powder down to do three times that.

Best of luck to you.

“I had an Israeli Mauser Kar98 chambered in 7.62 NATO many years ago.“

Sounds like a nice piece. I grabbed a pair of Ishapore Enfield in 7.62 NATO a few years back for $100 a copy. Slickest bolts I’ve ever fired. At 400 yards every shot is a winner.

Wish I’d gotten 6.

Well you just keep on doing that! I’ll go ahead and keep on running my show on the pursuit channel where every shot I make is on video. I don’t need to lie!

If you were talking about a cartridge for hunting mountain goats it might be better. For a SHTF situation it’s stupid. The prime consideration there is cost and availbility, not some minute difference in performance at ridiculous ranges.

168 grain Sierra Match King. Federal Match primer. Lake City brass. 41.5 grains of Reloader 12. Still have a pound or so of that left. At 100 yards I can cover a 3 round group with a quarter.

Not bad for an out of the box Savage Rifle.

Best,

L

“...Sounds like a nice piece....”

Yeah, it was... I was a bonehead for letting it go. On the magazine floor plate, bottom of the rifle, where the German Waffenamt stamp was, it had been struck over with a Star of David next to it. The wood work was beautiful... Argh... just remembering that pisses me off. Had the bayonet, original issue cleaning kit, cartridge belt with leather pouches...

RE Ishapores:
My buddy has one, a beautiful old Mark III in 7.62 NATO with the reinforcement strapping around the front for the grenade launcher. Love Enfields. Great battle rifle.
