It limits employment to 18-20 year olds. Ineligible for the NFL but good for those who don't belong in a big time college program where they are used as indentured servants for 3+ years. $50k/yr + enrollment at a local community college. NFL style football rather than the spread style college game which is unsuited for training for the NFL. It fills a BIG void. Gainful employment and no pressure as students/celebrities. They can pay their bills while getting more NFL ready. Would it work? Anything that would get the thugs off campus would help clean up the graft going on in the major programs.
It may be a summer league only but ideally the season would end in late September. Limited games. Only the best H.S. players need apply.
Indentured servants, really? How very woke of you.
For many, “identured servant” at $50 large per year and community college would be preferable to “inmate” doing 3 to 10.
Interesting. Maybe they could give some white athletes a shot instead of following the herd mentality of NFL and college coaches that assumes Caucasians are ipso facto inferior.
It needs to be racially diverse in proportion to the population.
I’ve always thought that there should be a university where the curriculum is designed around the sports leagues.
While not only getting credit for playing (practices would be equal to lab-time credit) but they would need to study and pass courses in Officiating, Ethics, Community Involvement, Personal Finances, Philanthropy, etc.
Just the classes on officiating and ewthics would result in less arrogant players moving on to professional sports as well as give even the lesser talent (AK: “undrafted”) students the chance to stay close to their sport as officials, journalists, etc.
Absence of co-eds might be a drawback vs. college?
I like your idea, but offer my 2 cents worth.
$50K a year would dis-incentivise going to the nearby Community College. Make it closer to $30K. That would put them more in step with the rest of the non-traditional student population that balances work/family/school that returned to better their lives.
Give an 18 to 20 year old kid too much cash and they just blow it. Plus the major college powers would have a hard time recruiting for their programs, since some of these kids don’t really have a pot to piss in to begin with.
How come nobody ever mentions the fact that there IS an alternative to regular football? I mean, good, old-fashioned RUGBY. No rigid padding. No stopping the game every time the ball touches the ground. Another teammate picks up the ball and either runs, passes to another, or kicks it. No four-hour “games” because of ads and station breaks. 2 hrs, max. Just good, all-out hard play, forty minutes to a half. All the ads are during the halftime break. Players STAND for their national anthems, and they SING.
Good point. and constant unrelenting drug testing. No Steroids.
I’m on your side.
Indentured servants. Ok they’re slaves who are coddled. Remember Laurence Phillips? Suspended him until the bowl game. Ok, so $30k would be more appropriate. Still it must be enough to stay away from the lure of big time programs. Then there’s the rest of the year. Spread payments over 12 months. Mandate courses in personal finance and behavior. Do what the single parent didn’t do. Kinda like basic training in the military.
And they do HAKAS ! ....well some do!
Safer too, you’re going after the ball not the man!
Once they get that first game check they’re ineligible for college unless they play another sport. Locate the teams beyond commuting distance of big name schools. No dual sport athletes. No fooling around with cheerleaders.
>>>>>>NFL style football rather than the spread style college game which is unsuited for training for the NFL.<<<<<<<
No longer an accurate statement. The best offenses in the NFL incorporate MANY features of college offenses these days; spread formations, no fullback, 3 or 4 receivers, zone blocking, read options, run-pass options, moving pockets in the passing game... the list goes on.
Don’t locate the teams way out in the sticks. A ‘diverse’ not-so-small community that’s not doing so well. Think Stockton. A humbling place. Make them work at a McJob part time. Bus rides to away games. Remember only a few will be drafted so the ‘life training’ will be important for those that don’t make it.
The rules have been tailored in this manner.
Bill Polian talks about it in his (excellent) book.
I think it could work.
But they need damn good insurance, which could price out all opportunity.
NFL can afford such insurance...essentially being self insured.
But eventually even they will be put out of business by ex players.
TBI kills. And a person with TBI cannot waive their rights, even with counsel.
Oh, and TBI starts in High School. That first BIG hit.
