Best Full size 9mm Handguns
Am Shooting Journal ^ | 3/8/2019 | C Cocoles

Posted on 03/08/2019 5:11:46 AM PST by w1n1

There are so many good 9mm handguns available to shooters these days and the choices are just humongous.
Going with a full size 9mm handgun for home defense is hard to beat. Combine this with quality loads will give you knock down power and able to rapidly fire accurately is a huge plus. This may be one of the reasons why the FBI have gone back to the 9mm as the primary service pistol for their agents.
Almost hands down 9mm handgun is now one of the most popular self-defense calibers for concealed and open carry. In this segment of full service pistols we’ll look at some 9mm caliber handguns. What makes it a full size is the barrel length. Anywhere near the length of 5 inches we're stating it as a full size.

Here's a quick list not the complete list of some of the best full size 9mm handguns:
Smith&Wesson M&P9 2.0
There have been some changes made to Smith&Wessons M&P pistol. The changes are stronger frame strength, with extra stippling around the grip with a heavy texture, beaver tail has been removed, small front serrations have been added for ease of handling and the top of the slide slimmed down a bit.

Springfield Armory 9mm XD(M)
This handgun is your more bang for the buck. It is packed with features and shoots flawlessly. Pretty fun to shoot with.

Glock 19
Think you all know the G19 reputation for its reliability is off the charts and is by far the most popular handgun in the United States. It is a striker fired polymer frame pistol that other handguns in the same class are compared to and sets the standard for this class of handgun.

Sig Sauer P320
The Sig Sauer P320 (the chosen one) has been chosen by the army as it’s new serive sidearm. It has a lot of variants so finding something that fits your requirements is simple. The trigger breaks around 6.5 pounds allowing for precise and quick follow up shots.

FN FNS-9L Long Slide
With its low price the FN509 is making its mark and it’s giving Glock a run for their money. The stainless steel slide is serrated in all the right places and it comes with night sights. The grip is just like holding a 1911, especially with the pronounced beavertail that lets you get high up on the gun and close to the bore axis. Read the rest of the best full size 9mm handguns.

This is next on my purchase list. A pal has one, it runs like a sewing machine, hits steel at 100 yards all day long, rapid fire at 50 yards, and there is virtually no recoil or muzzle flip.

PSA AR-9 "pistol." They are back-ordered for a reason: they are fantastic.

Barrels from 4" on out. Take all standard Glock 9mm mags, including the 33 rounders.

The .380 and 9mm Mak are close enough that it might work but I wouldn’t try it except in an emergency.

The Mak is more powerful, the case a tiny bit longer and the bullet a couple of thousandths larger. Accuracy would normally be a bit worse because of the undersized bullet.

Hey! Anyone who’s ever been unjustifiably SCREWED will quickly see those things as potentially dangerous. (Snicker-snort)!

I personally prefer the .40 S&W to the 9mm now. Here is a website you might find helpful: https://gundynamics.com/about

I'm not. It's 'Am Shooting Journal'. It's a bunch of junior high bloggers who have no clue what they're talking about, and have never shot anything more than Airsoft.

In fact, here's exclusive video of 'w1n1' testing the latest technology for his next article.

My first nice pistol was a Browning Hi-Power. I had King’s hardware in DeFuniak Springs order it. Cost $104.50 in 1969.

It had a gorgeous finish, also came with a pistol rug.

Agree on your Sig assessment.

Carried a P-226 while active, had a chance to buy it for a ridiculously low price when I retired but didn’t (really dumb move).

My daily carry is a 2022 which is pretty much a “poor man’s” 226. Have a 320 Compact and a S&W M&P which spends more time in it’s case than anything. Still waiting to get a P-365 for everyday use.

I have never had a problem with the Sig and it’s my brand of choice.

I have a small collection of Glocks, consisting of a G26, several G17s and a G34. The one I shoot the most, hands down is my Gen 4 G17.

Last fall I won a Springfield XDm with a 4.5” barrel. This handgun offers a good comparison to a G17. I mention this because the article we are commenting on is positive with respect to the SA.

My personal opinion is, while the grip angle might be more favorable to those who don’t care for Glocks, the stock triggers when fairly compared is terrible on the SA, while for a little bit of time and effort a stock Glock trigger can be vastly improved.

But in the end it is a personal decision as one is not vastly more accurate or easier to handle or clean than the other.

Ditto that. My vintage Baretta 92 was among my favorite tools before the boating accident. Well, along with my Colt 45 ACP and my Ruger Mark I 22. Also lost in the same accident.

CZ 75. Ergonomic, accurate and incredibly reliable. In terms of functionality, I’d rate it as the best handgun I own.....and I own “a few”.

The two rounds are indeed of different dimension, but a .380 (9X17 mm) can be “fired” in a 9mm Mak (9X18mm), but not well. Why do this, because you can order reasonably priced 9X18mm online. Just Google it.
