VIDEO: $1.99 Corned Beef Deal at Aldi

This is a great deal I found this week at Aldi. Only $1.99 per pound for this corned beef. In fact, I was surprised it happened so early since St. Patrick's Day is still 2 weeks away. I'm sure there will be other deals but why wait? Grab this one while there are still supplies available. In addition to enjoying this corned beef for dinner, I also heated up several slices of leftover corned beef along with eggs and had them for breakfast this morning.

My wife, who is Irish, is preparing our corned venison today for St. Paddy’s. We use venison from the field, and the potatoes and cabbage I grew last year. Do it every year.

And, of course, the Killians red.

"Flavored with up to 35% water, salt, sodium phosphates, sodium erythorbate, sodium nitrate, flavorings, papain."

35 percent! Plus there is an extra flavor packet included.

The meat quality is so bad, they have to add over 35% chemicals to make it taste like meat.

I like Aldi’s but that $1.99 per pound deal is the point cut of corned beef. I made that last year (bought at Aldi) and it had too much embedded fat. aka marbled fat

So the next week I got the more expensive cut (maybe dollar more per lb) (I think is called flat cut) and I liked the lower fat lots better.

I cooked corned beef three times last March
My last experiment was to put the flat cut o corned beef in a thick bottomed pot on the stove with ZERO ADDED WATER. On a very low flame. It came out great

As far as the traditional boiled (really just simmer them on low) Irish veg accompaniments......Leave the vegetables whole. Do not cut them up. Simmer the vegetables such as carrot potatoes and cabbage. Celery. Toss in a whole celery bunch uncut up. Whole cabbage do not cut it up!!!! If you do the flavor leaches into the broth.

Lastly have some good strong bread at the table that you spread mustard on and then a slab of your hot corned beef. Of course just as good the next day cold or at room temperature. My preference is Dijon mustard from Aldi.

Smoked corned beef is Pastrami. Awesome hot off the smoker by its self, but meant for sandwiches. Soak and rinse the corned beef first. If you don’t it turns out being a salt lick. I actually prefer point for smoking. You don’t smoke anywhere near as long as briskit.

Try corned beef on the BBQ. BBQ corned beef is pastrami. Big time yum.

Aldi seems like such an outlier company to me.
I always think of German as expensive and complicated.
These stores are the complete opposite.
Even their tv adverts are crazy quirky.

They sell stuff at amazing low prices.
Save us a LOT of money.

$1.99 a pound for meat makes me suspicious as to the quality. Perhaps this is legit and Aldi’s is selling it as a “loss leader” (to get people into the stores to buy other stuff). I’ll let others chime in. I don’t go to Aldi’s very often - I’m more of a Trader Joe’s fan myself.

Limit 2 per customer... picked up two this past week...

Their avocados are small, even though only 49 cents.

SERVE Slice meat across the grain. Serve with mustard or horseradish vinegar.

Take the corned beef and coat it with racked black pepper, cracked coriander seed and cracked juniper berries. Smoke it for a couple of hours. Put on a rack in a pan with a little water on the bottom. Tightly cover with foil. Bake at 275 for about 4-5 hrs. Congrats. You just made the best pastrami ever.

Interesting. I don’t really care for pastrami, but I always find it interesting to find out how food is prepared. Actually, I’ve never had corned beef, as far as I know.

I don’t get this post about cheap corned beef. Is it a joke? Sarcasm! What’s the point?

But how do you use it?

Do you dribble the vinegar on the meat and vegetables?

Serve the vinegar in a cruet. Top veggies with optional butter, salt and pepper, and lightly pour vinegar over the works.

You couldn’t pay me to eat corned beef.
And the same goes for cooked cabbage.
