VANITY: They took away my Classic Rock DJ - request to email to get him back!

Dear Fellow FReepers,

I'm probably the only person in America who still faithfully listens to Classic Rock on terrestrial radio, specifically a Washington, DC-based station - BIG 100.3 FM.

This morning, I noticed that they took away my favorite DJ, El Duave, and in his place put on a national show titled "The Real Deal", which mixes automotive, music, politics, etc. I'm upset about this because I tune to BIG 100 to escape from politics and all that stuff, and to listen to my favorite tunes as I run my errands, cook and do housework on weekends. During the week I'm so busy at work that listen to Classic Rock from El Duave on weekends is my favorite thing to do. He's FANTASTIC!

May I request for you to please email the station to demand that El Duave gets reinstated? I would be so appreciative! I know all about the power of FR -- I still remember the time back in 2005-2006 when we all lobbied WMAL to keep Michael Graham, by sending the station emails and phone calls.

Thanks to all -- Classic Rock Rules!

You’re very welcome! You can listen online...and on your phone with an aux cord in your car.

You’re not wrong, but Noory doesn’t bother me too much :) Linda MH is terrific, I try to stay awake whenever she is on.

You are not the only one. There are two above-average ones in my area. Good !uck.

Okay I finally got his response to my asking him what time slot he is now in. It is as follows:

Varies. Not much this month. Presidents Day morning is next. Thanks for your support!

It was 1982, and Stern was working at radio station DC101 in Washington, D.C.; relatively unknown outside of local radio. On Jan. 13, an Air Florida plane that took off from Washington National Airport crashed into the nearby 14th Street Bridge, killing 74 people. The next day, Stern poked fun at the crash on his show and called Air Florida to ask what the fare was for a one-way ticket from the National Airport to the 14th Street Bridge. The resulting controversy and other incidents led to Stern being fired from the station six months later.

So it was a bit more than just the 14th St. Bridge call to Air Florida, because he didn't get fired until 6 months later.

I always thought it was Greaseman, but he got fired by saying something to the affect it's surprising more aren't drug behind trucks, in reference to that disgusting event where an older black man was drug behind a pickup truck by two white boys.

I highly recommend a Sirius radio subscription. Like you, I have thousands of songs on a classic rock playlist but even 6,000 songs is not variety enough. So I am always adding to that playlist by listening to Sirius Radio.

Even on their many classic rock stations (i.e. Classic Rewind; Deep Tracks; Underground Garage) I am constantly discovering music from that era that I missed. Just some recent examples are these songs that I never heard at the time they were released:

"Willin'" by Linda Ronstadt
"As The Years Go By" by Mashmakhan
"Home and Dry" by Gerry Rafferty

So continue to expand your horizons. I even discover great rock tracks on stations that play more recent music like "The Loft", "Lithium" and "Spectrum". Then there's some great country/rock stations like "Willie's Roadhouse" and "Outlaw Country".

The classic stuff you already know is likely great but there's a lifetime of discovery still out there.

As for the original poster, it's time to move away from terrestrial radio with their narrow playlists and 22 minutes an hour (or more) of commercials.

I’d never heard Willin’ before. Maybe it was a concert-only number. Can’t say as it’s one of her better ones.

Apart from the fact I don’t like spending $200 a year for subscription fees, the fact is my car does not have a satellite radio. Even though it’s a 2017 model.

But I have had cars in the past with Sirius XM. And they surely do have a wide and varied playlist.
