I am assuming Fauxhauntas is not talking about three centuries of Spanish colonial rule. If "colonialism" dies hard, how about giving Puerto Rico its independence. VIVA PUERTO RICO LIBRE!!!

Yes, the Trump family has been among the most brutal imposers of colonialism for hundreds of years. That’s why so many colonial hell-holes around the world have “Trump” in their names.

The problem with Puerto Rico is that it is full of Puerto Ricans.

I’m for immediate Puerto Rican independence also. The sooner the better...we really don’t need their population with its majority being ‘RAT wannabes. And no, I realize that a substantial number don’t fit that mold.

Colonialism, the new media word of the week no doubt.

Yep, just grant them immediate independence.
Cut them lose.
Then they can print whatever currency they want, and as much as they want.

Like Detroit’s debt? Illinois’ debt? California’s debt?

Gray Beaver just had a meeting with Carmen Yulin Cruz, the rabidly anti-Trump mayor there, so this rhetoric is really no surprise

The Spanish-American War was an ANTI-colonial war. Its primary motivation was an independent Cuba. Within a few years of the war, we spun that place off as an independent country. Not that Cuba fared well as an independent country. They first suffered under right-wing military dictators and then under communist dictators.

We also wound up with Philippines and Puerto Rico. In our estimation neither of these two places was ready for independence. Perhaps Senator Warren would like to comment on that assessment. Maybe she thinks one or both of those places was ready for independence circa 1900. But, why be rational about the issue, when you can spew hatred?

With respect to the Philippines, it gained its independence soon after WWII. During our occupation, we wound up with a problem that plagued the place prior to our involvement, and has plagued it since we left; namely, the Moros. This year, the Republic of the Philippines has a vote on expanding the semi-autonomous area of the Moros. So, maybe, 150 years after we took the place over, and 80 years after independence, they’re figuring out a way to square this circle. Perhaps, Senator Warren would like to comment on how we, the U.S., are responsible for the conflict between the Moros and the other people of the Philippines.

With respect to Puerto Rico, our occupation continued for a while, and we thought the decent thing to do was grant them self-rule, and see if they could develop a consensus for moving forward. Until recently, there was no majority for either independence or for joining the U.S. as a state. Our constitution doesn’t really provide for colonies. Instead, we turn “territories” into states; well, provided they would be viable states.

The problem with Puerto Rico is that it is an economic basket case. They can’t balance their budget, and they have infrastructure that is near collapse because of decades of neglect. Of course, Senator Warren could maybe speak to why the people of Puerto Rico cannot govern themselves. But, there’s no reason to, since to her it’s obviously the white man’s fault. Every problem in the entire effing world is the white man’s fault. The world, you see, was a utopia before humans started copulating with pigs and spawned white people.

does she even understand that PR is named PR because it was Spanish colonial ? and the British didn’t want it? And if PR wants independence, why all the hullaballoo about fixing PR after a hurricane? Speaking of which, it seems to be just fine there, as attested by all those congresscritters and lobbyists who just had a lovely vacation with all their needs met with not even a cursory nod to the locals.
