Hiya, kids. Am I right—that you don’t need me to tell you how men should not hit women? Or that men should not hit 12 year old girls?
Not in the face, not by a full-grown, 6’ 5” BIG man, not using a punch that would knock down a horse?
Well that’s what seems to have maybe, allegedly happened.
As an ex-private eye and security type, I want to look at it all more closely. Check this out first:
“Very large man, David Bell, knocks out 12 yo girl outside an Asheville, NC mall”
“She got her Bell rung.
“He, idiotically, got involved in behavior that’s best left alone and viewed from afar, especially if you cannot control yourself and end up knocking out children with 250 pound death blows to the face. Now his life is altered. Online jail records show that Bell is 6 foot 5 inches tall and weighs 250 pounds. David Bell is a piano teacher in his hometown of Black Mountain, North Carolina.

Okay. Here’s the sequence I saw and isolated in the video, without any special equipment:
Bell is walking around, seemingly acting as some sort of referee, in some sort of screaming, girl-argument or fight, when he is suddenly shoved from behind.
Did you see that the first time? Probably not. Check it again—it’s fast.
Bell is shoved from behind by—from the video—an apparently “black girl” in a dark, longsleeved top. But he seems to ignore it and keeps walking around. Maybe he picks up who did it, I don’t know.
The screaming girl-fight continues. It looks wild. There seem to be adults of several races present. I don’t know if race plays any part in it. We’re not told that and are likely not allowed or permitted to know. But there are girls and women of different races present.
Okay, and yes, the alleged, 12 year old appears to be a black girl.
Next, Bell unfortunately shoves the screaming, alleged, 12 year old girl, and she is vaulted backward a pretty good distance—several body-lengths. This is a powerful shove.
Maybe she’s the one who pushed Bell from behind earlier; I don’t know. Maybe she’s bold—fearless—encouraged by the Obama/Holder Axis to “not take any crap?” I don’t know.
But she then charges at Bell (bad mistake) and is screaming at him when he unfortunately unloads a punch that would knock down a horse.
The allegedly 12 year girl old folds over backwards like wet laundry and is on the ground out cold, crumpled up like a disconnected marionette.
Here are some stills I made from the video, using no special equipment:
First, Bell is shoved from behind. Did you catch that the first time? See the hand on his back? The dark sleeve? The apparently black face of the pusher almost out of frame?
Bell walks around for awhile but, in the next frame shown below, he inexplicably shoves the allegedly 12 year old girl. She vaults backward, gathers herself, and then charges at him, screaming at him.
Bell punches her and she drops like she was shot in the head.
Here: see the hand on his back? The arm in the dark sleeve? The black face? In the next frame depicted, he shoves her.

What I find interesting is that the screaming crowd seems to immediately clear out and disperse!
For the first time in video-recorded history a white male has dispersed a screaming bunch of juveniles and adults, some of who appear “black.”
WRONG STUFF TO HAVE DONE! YES!
BUT OKAY—WHAT THE HELL WAS HE SUPPOSED TO DO?
FIRST, Bell should NEVER have involved himself in this. He should have called 911, or left the area. As the author of the news article stated, “He, idiotically, got involved in behavior that’s best left alone and viewed from afar....”
Very good.
I mean —WHO, willingly involves themselves in an apparently mixed-racial, chick fight? For that matter, who in their right mind would involve themselves in any chick fight to begin with?
But wait—once involved, what should he have done?
The girl charges at him. We are taught to use equal force only. This is ostensibly used to just stop the threat. Okay, let’s say she charges at him. What can he do?
He can put a hand out to gently as possible stop her, but then he would maybe get jumped on by the mob and maybe arrested.
He can gently take hold of her and peaceably restrain her but then he would maybe get jumped on by the mob and maybe arrested.
Ergo, the only thing he could have done was stand still, let her charge, let her scream, let her jump on him, and maybe get jumped on by the mob and maybe arrested.
Now, however, once he has a few of the mob jumping and hanging off him, he’s “under attack” and can slew them off . He can use ONLY enough force to stop the attack. And maybe that means “cleaning house.”
But then maybe he gets jumped on by the mob and maybe arrested.
The moral instruction of the story?
As my sainted, South Philly father, Mr. Friedberg, used to say:
“You walk away from trouble, Jeffrey. You walk away.”
I think in this particular instance, of “Beauty And The Bell”—my old dad and his South Philly Ways, wuz right.
Tho only reason why black/white is mentioned is to turn this into a condemnation of one race.
It is about one person, not all who have been labeled “White” .
You have to very carefully watch the 4 to 6 second mark of the video to see that the GUY was the first one to put his hands on someone and spin them out of his way to confront someone else (you can’t clearly see this but I am using a common sense filter to explain what is visible in the video). The person he moved out of his way was probably the girl who then pushed him from behind.
At the very beginning he yells, ‘break it up’. He was probably leaving and decided to get involved with someone else’s beef. After he yelled, one of the girls probably said something offensive to him and that is when he spins someone out of his way at the 5 second mark to confront the girl who said something to him.
He obviously didn’t have the ability to quell whatever was going on and he put his family in unnecessary danger by just not continuing on his way. I’m sure the girls are no saints but he is a dummy who will pay a serious price. He’ll certainly better learn to never mess with anyone again because his best punch, from a 6’5” 250 lb. man didn’t hurt a 12 year old girl who ran right into it.
Exactly. Considering the context, the man likely saved his family and himself from serious harm.

I worked for 25 years in the middle of this type of crap. Our town was commonly understood to have the worst problems in the Northwest with these types of situations.
First this story seems to be written in a way that is meant to evoke a reaction and not actually give an accurate accounting of whatever took place. A group of aggressive unruly teens can be very dangerous regardless of their skin color or sex. I have been around 12 year olds who are as dangerous as adults. The fact that the girl was OK when authorities arrived and not seeking medical treatment would tend to discount this exaggerated “death punch” “that would knock down a horse” nonsense.
I am sure that it was a “teachable moment” for both the girl and the guy she was apparently attacking when he attempted to defend himself and his family. But it is difficult to tell at least from this story what was really going on.
I would have punch that 12 year old in a heartbeat......
He first mistake was trying to break up a fight. My understand he just told the kids to knock it out. It appear the girl-gang were trying to fight some other girl. Don’t have much info on that fact. But it that was your child being gang up on would you want someone to step in and help.
When I was in Washington DC a couple years ago, a similar thing happen. The group of black kids kill a man who intervene in a fight trying to help a victim of the fight. The victim and gang turn on the man.
Second I have been a victim of black violence, beaten black and blue. My mistake was I did not punch first once I was surrounded.
Once surrounded forget the law / not hitting a child, do anything to defend yourself. From watching video, the girl-gang circle him for the knock out punch. The girl who got knock out push him twice. They were trying to knock him on the ground. Most likely a game, since they had cellphone filming going...
You hit hard and fast no matter the age or the race of the person. Your life and ability to function in life is at stake. They could have hurt him seriously. One little knock out punch could kill you depending on how you fall and if they follow through with kicks.
...hopefully the girl wasn’t seriously injured and learned a powerful but painful lesson.
There's no lesson to learn when folks like you will excuse her behavior.

so to sum up. He should have checked her ID first to make sure she waist’t 12. He loses his right to self defense if the person is under 18. He will get probation and walk away. If I were on the jury, you can delete the probation.
I thought most malls required 11 year olds be accompanied by an adult. The man’s family should sue the mall for lack of security and allowing roving gangs to assemble. Many crimes in urban settings are committed by children for adults because the penalties are less for children.
The little girl attacking the adult probably has a long history of beating her mother...if she lives with one.
