"My congratulations to Sir Cliff Richard. By taking the BBC and the police to court over their shocking treatment of an unproven allegation against him, he has struck a mighty blow for justice...."

Peter Hitchens Column July 21st, 2018....

"....A time for living, a time for believing, a time for trusting, not deceiving, love and laughter and joy ever after, ours for the taking, just follow the Master...."

Cliff Richard Sings His UK Number One Christmas Song "Misteltoe and Wine"....

As Tommy Robinson's appeal was heard at the UK High Court on July 18th this year, another case was ruled on with a victory for Sir Cliff Richard.

When the American rock n roll starts hit the scene in the late 1950's the UK didn't have one to compare with Elvis Presley or Rick Nelson or Little Richard etc. etc.

But then along came Cliff Richard who became a music and movie superstar in his early years His music career spanned the decades and while he was famous in the UK and other countries, he would have limited success in the United States best remembered in the 1970's for songs like "Devil Woman" and "We Don't Talk Anymore".

In 1964 Cliff, raised in the Anglican Church, would come forward at a Billy Graham Crusade and begin a life as a popular music star and a committed Evangelical Christian.

His reputation was smeared in the secular, cynical media but Cliff successfully sued when was called a "fascist" in the British media decades ago.

So it should come as no surprise when this awful accusation against him surfaced and the South Yorkshire Police (the ones who arrested Tommy Robinson on May 25th this year) would leak to the BBC which in turn would draw attention to the notion that Cliff Richard was a child sex abuser, Richard would go to court again.

The police settled for 400-thousand pounds and the BBC and the police were forced by the court ruling to pay 210-thousand pounds in damages for invading his privacy.

Good for Cliff on beating back this failed attempt to destroy him. I came to know of him and his music via his association with Larry Norman:

Unfortunately no one in the police nor the BBC will suffer personally as a result of this ruling; no one will be sacked and they will all continue to draw their salaries and pensions just as before. And they will continue down the same road. The bill will be picked up by neither the police nor the bbc, but by the long suffering ordinary tax-payers. The police bill will be picked up by increases in local council taxes which will be increased next spring. The bbc probably by taking away free tv licences from pensioners. This is how it works when the socialists gain control.

That’s great, thanks, both have such unique voices - I’m glad both are still with us. I suppose - like most people - I was pretty ignorant of Brit Rock pre-Beatles - but I’ve been a Van fan since “Brown Eyed Girl”.

If the Beeb stuck to entertainment programming only it wouldn’t be as insufferable. It did the best “Dracula” adaption (1977) ever, at least.

Cliff gave a young Olivia Newton-John a huge boost when he had her on his UK tv show in the early 1970s. They toured together as well during that time period. There is a photo of them also during that time frame in this article from the Daily Mail.

And adopted as the theme for Britcom “The Young Ones. “ One of the characters was mildly obsessed with Cliff.

Wow, I had no idea there was such a thing. I bought that album (In another land) on vinyl from a little used record shop in Windsor Ontario, back when a buddy and I used to make the odd trip to Canucka to get some good food and look for bargain bin records.

Hearing Larry & Cliff together like that is great - thanks for sharing!

Really? I don’t think I ever heard that.

I was superficially acquainted with Larry Norman: I lived near his parents, saw him locally once or twice, and usually spoke to him before or after any of his concerts (which I always attended when I could).

There are too many to recount, but the Day in the Sun, an all-day outdoor festival, a la Day on the Green, ending with Larry, was a high point. Many other acts performed, Randy Stonehill included, of course.

I actually enjoyed People! before I knew who Norman was.

LN lived in the UK in the 1970s, and was friends with Paul McCartney and others, so I should not be surprised he knew Cliff Richard.

Cliff Richard was regarded as the Elvis Presley of Britain.

That was his trilogy part three.

All three are high on my list. Planet is usually mentioned as one the greatest Christian Rock albums ever.

My short list:

Only Visiting This Planet - Larry Norman
Shotgun Angel - Daniel Amos
Welcome to Paradise - Randy Stonehill
Horrendous Disc - Daniel Amos
In Another Land - Larry Norman
In the Volume of the Book - The Second Chapter of Acts
Come for the Children - Oden Fong
White Horse - Michael Omartian
So Long Ago the Garden - Larry Norman
Sail On Sailor - Mustard Seed Faith
Divine Discontent - Sixpence None the Richer
(Eponymous) - Sixpence None the Richer
(Eponymous) - Daniel Amos
Upon This Rock - Larry Normon

“I bought that album (In another land) on vinyl from a little used record shop in Windsor Ontario”

It was sometimes difficult to find LN’s records back in the day - he was often considered too “Christian” for most non-religious record stores and too “Secular” for the Christian outlets/bookstores. Often it was word of mouth on where to get a record or when a concert was happening.

He was a pioneer in a lotta ways, I think he did one of the first internet streamed concerts (audio) in 1997. It was streamed in the now-rarely used Real Audio format. He also held occasional IRC chats with fans back then.

Ah, you must lived in the SF area then. Norman was born in TX, but I don’t know how long his family were there.

Yeah, his concerts were usually great good fun to go to, he was just as often hilarious as he was serious.

I had a record of “I love you” by People back in the day (on Capital Records). Here he plays it in later years with a few other “People”, backed by his younger bro’s (Charlie Norman) band.

He was indeed connected to a lot of celebs/musicians to some degree or another in different ways. On his website, his brother posted this picture he happened on while sifting through all of the stuff Larry left when he passed away. Kind of an odd couple here! -

Santa Clara County. LN lived in San Francisco and San Jose at different times, before moving north later. His parents, teachers, lived and retired in San Jose.

Thanks for the links.
