In the first five minutes of this video, this woman goes on and on about how happy and excited she is because she just got back the results of her mitochondrial DNA test. She took the test because she wanted to find out which African tribe or tribes she is descended from. A person (male or female) inherits Mitochondrial DNA solely from their mother.
After five minutes of joyous anticipation, she finally opens the envelope and looks at the results.
She is absolutely devastated to find out that her mitochondrial DNA is of “non-African lineage.”

No, it was after her "European" discovery, and she hit her mother up for the family maternal history.
Granted, her mother being light-skin-toned should have perhaps clued her in while reading the results.
OK, I’m going to rain on the parade here. When I lived in Africa in 1968 the military command there said the local Ethiopians s were black Caucasians. I bought into this as their facial features were not typically of the Negro race. However, their skin was black. Google a picture of their leader at the time, Haile Selassie, and you will see he is black with what is likely Arabian facial features.

My point with post #84 is that this young girl’s results could quite likely be accurate where as it is possible to inherit the black skin color and still be Caucasian.
I have a cousin who works for ancestry. They have quite a useful and well-documented site for those willing to do a little work. The DNA testing product was introduced because they found so many people unwilling to do just a little work on their documentary site.
Once you've done a little work, the DNA test can be quite useful to fill gaps. Before then, it is mostly just for bragging rights.
They have a much larger database now and refined their results. They originally reported that I was 10% Spanish or Portuguese and now it’s gone!

She took a test carelessly without stopping to think about it. She should have known from looking in the mirror that she's of mixed race (like most American "blacks") somewhere along the line. But the thought that her black ancestry was paternal, not maternal, never crossed her mind. Clearly a product of public schooling.

Definitely. The killer thing the mitochondrial DNA test results helps with is finding distant cousins and networking. If you get lucky you can connect with people who have spent their whole lives researching your family name. Doesn’t always work out that way of course. :-)

She needs to get a male family member to do a Y-DNA test now.
