Nationalism...What does it mean?

What is nationalism exactly. Here is a definition from my dictionary.

Nationalism n. 1. Devotion to the nation as a whole; patriotism. 2. A world order founded on the right of each nation to determine its policies unhindered by others: opposed to 'internationalism'. 4. A demand for national independence. 5. A national custom, trait, etc.

I was pondering how Nazism and Communism are the same. Nazis are forced to worship the race that is approved by the state. Commies are forced to worship the state. They are nearly identical and falsely put on opposite sides of the same spectrum.

Nationalism is falsely equated to Nazism.

If I had to reduce it to one word I would say “Legitimacy”.

Two terms I've heard lately:

International nationalism - Similar to #2 above.

Defensive nationalism - The right of a nation to resist invasion by mass migration.

It's a term that has been co-opted and attached to "white" to turn patriotic Americans into racists, and to keep non-whites from leaving the Democrat plantation.

Don't listen to those "nationalists" who are trying to falsely lure you into freedom and economic safety, they're all white racists. Stay here where's its safe - vote Democrat - and we'll take care you.

It's a form of mental slavery.

This question has become preeminent since the invasion of Europe by "refugees" from the Middle East and Africa and a slower but longer invasion from Latin America to the US.

People are wanting to circle the wagons and decide who's on the inside and who's on the outside. Some choose nation. Some choose race. Some choose their specific tribe, i.e. family and close friends. Some choose culture such as Western European. Some choose religion or even a more specific faith.

I think it's an interesting discussion that will continue for quite some time.

My own take is that I really don't see any of these identity groups going anywhere. Most people just want to be able to work to make enough money to take care of themselves and their loved ones. I can see some small family groups going out to the hinterlands to try and be self-sufficient, but that will be a real tiny minority.

All other identity groups will come up against the multiculti freemarketeer/welfare status quo. Their attempts to unify will be denounced, stifled, and even made illegal.

The biggest problem, however, will be purity spiraling within identity groups. How white do you have to be in order to be considered white? Do you need to get tested via 23andMe or similar and meet some minimum percentage? How Western European do you have to be? Or how Catholic? Or how faithful to the US Constitution? Would Ted Cruz qualify as a US Citizen? Not by some purity standards.

My fear is that we will muddle along on our materialistic ways until we are either undermined by the Chinese or overwhelmed by Islam.

Our bloated empire is ripe for the picking.

The Left equates Nationalism and Patriotism with Chauvinism.
And since Chauvinism is bad, the others are too.
That's how they undermine the language.

Simply put: there is a line between a healthy love of country that seeks, insofar as possible, to live at peace with all nations.

Versus an *idolatry* of country to the point of racist jingoism.

American nationalism is difficult to quantify because of the mixture of races and ethnic origins which make up our core national fabric. In the name of political correctness: Leftist Marxists have done everything to rob us of civic cohesion and identity rooted in our Constitution.

However movements like the Confederate Rebellion and Jim Crow did not help matters either. Our Union still bears the scars.
