Enough with the politicizing at the funeralizing. Its worse than 3 days of rain (which its going to do in these parts) on a holiday weekend. I know theres more scheduled for today but Im going to take a pass. Instead Ill be celebrating a musicality Sunday, with a slight nod towards the neon gods that have and will be laid to rest this past week.
My first selection, something I could use a bit more of:
And the people bowed and prayed
To the neon god they made
And the sign flashed out its warning
In the words that it was forming
And the sign said, the words of the prophets are written on the subway walls
And tenement halls
And whispered in the sounds of silence
Next, a musical quiz to honor the Queen of Souls hometown record label: it was originally conceived to accompany the Motown CD Dewey put together for Creepers FFF in Le Claire Iowa 2 years ago (?!) already. And now, thanks to Arethas passing, its relevant again so better late than never. Heres the question:
Which recording artist/s listed on Dewey From Detroits Motown Mix, FFF2016 Collectors Edition never, evah, record on the Motown label?
There are a couple of Democratic rules in play in order to keep things on the up and up:
- No cheating - no looking up the answers on the Intertubes
- You may phone a friend
- You can cheat if you must
And finally, just for fun: I love this YouTube clip from Hip Hop fan Joey Reacts as he listens to Pink Floyds Time for, well, the first time: It feels so good to hear this music, I dont know why! Allow me to venture a guess: because its music, not misogynist rapping.
Because the vast repertoire of modern music is so awful there seems to be a new sub-industry of videos consisting of nothing more than millennials reactions to listening to classics for the first time (Pink Floyd appears to be a favorite, for obvious reasons). I would think looking for a job would be a better use of their time, but thats just me.
Ah well, enjoy what time youve got any way you wish.
Ticking away the moments that make up a dull day
Fritter and waste the hours in an offhand way.
Kicking around on a piece of ground in your home town
Waiting for someone or something to show you the way.Tired of lying in the sunshine staying home to watch the rain.
You are young and life is long and there is time to kill today.
And then one day you find ten years have got behind you.
No one told you when to run, you missed the starting gun.So you run and you run to catch up with the sun but it's sinking
Racing around to come up behind you again.
The sun is the same in a relative way but you're older,
Shorter of breath and one day closer to death.Every year is getting shorter never seem to find the time.
Plans that either come to naught or half a page of scribbled lines
Hanging on in quiet desperation is the English way
The time is gone, the song is over,
Thought I'd something more to sayPosted from: MOTUS A.D.
Time. I love Floyd.
GREAT song!
There’s a really fascinating story behind that song and how Simon and Garfunkel became an unexpected success.

Time. I love Floyd.
You gotta love his reactions.
Looking forward to our amazing future — blacpipo and wipipo together. We just need to destroy the Democrats first.
Just watched the Time video yesterday, and here it is in freeperland today. Watch the same guy listen to Great gig in the sky.
I love introducing Genesis “Carpet Crawlers” to someone .. even someone who knows the genre, and even Genesis. Many people have never (!) heard that song before and it sounds incredible through headphones.. even without today’s “Loudness wars”.
If someone loves the modern song “hooks” they’ll even be surprised by the unusual chord changes and timing that made that song so haunting. And again, most people .. even those who aren’t hidden from 70s music .. haven’t even heard of the song.
Watch this guy’s reaction to Great Gig in the Sky, upon hearing the vocal track for the very first time.
Look at the expression on his face at the 2:00 minute mark:

I made the same face 45 years ago.
Still do today.
Haha — I just watched that one. Again his reactions are great. I am right there with him.

I’m telling you, once we defeat the left, we are going to have an explosive, amazing future that will be almost unimaginable in its beauty and creativity.
Yeah, I know, far fetched, but at least we can hope.
Interesting interview with Clare Torry, the vocalist on Great Gig. https://youtu.be/mIW7xZSlZoM
Seems to me that if you quote Pink Floyd in the title you should give credit in the first paragraph, but maybe that’s just me.
And the lyrics to Pink Floyd’s “Time” should be given to every kid graduating from high school, and to every kid thinking about dropping out of high school.
The two lines of “Time” that always make my hair stand on end are “no one told you when to run; you missed the starting gun” and “hanging on in quiet desperation is the English way.” People unable to grasp what they want in life and go for it always fill me with horror and pity. Mostly horror.
One of the best.

I like the original, but Phil's version on "Seconds Out" is even better than Gabriel's original.
Just watched it. She recorded one of the most beautiful tracks in rock history.
Interesting to hear her comments.
LOL, I'd like to see their reaction to "The Waiting Room".
IMHO, "Anyway" is the best song on "The Lamb".
Yup. This one, to:
Welcome my son
Welcome to the machine
Where have you been?
It’s alright we know where you’ve been
You’ve been in the pipeline
Filling your time
Provided with toys and Scouting for Boys
You bought a guitar to punish your ma
And you didn’t like school
You know you’re nobody’s fool
So welcome to the machine
Welcome my son
Welcome to the machine
What did you dream?
It’s alright we told you what to dream
“Look at the expression on his face at the 2:00 minute mark”
That was priceless. Loved it! Hearing that music for the first time was an incredible experience. It still gives me chills.
I perform that song regularly!
And the answer to the musical trivia is, of course, RESPECT by Aretha. She was not part of the Motown lineup, as she recorded for Atlantic, with Tommy Dowd as her engineer.
