A crazed grizzly tore off part of a park ranger's scalp, half of an ear and several puncture wounds.
Miraculously, he survives and managed to drive himself to the hospital.
Suddenly I was just run over, Jordan Carbery said. It felt like two football players tackling me. The next thing I realize is that the bear had my head in its mouth and was picking me up.
Park Ranger Carberry had gone outside of his home in Bella Coola, British Columbia, to investigate a noise. He spotted a couple of bear cubs in one of his cherry trees.
Then he saw the mother bear.
"I looked over to see a sow grizzly bear looking right at me and heading straight for me," he said.
Carbery recalled attempting to escape the situation, but wasnt fast enough.
"I instantly turned and tried to get back to the house," he said. "I was only 40 feet out of the house. All of a sudden I just got tackled from behind and sent flying."
Carbery fought hard to get the beast off of him.
"I kicked her in the face three times at least, and then I tried to hit her in the face in the snout," he said. "She was like a prize boxer. She was so fast." Read the rest of this grizzly bear attacks park ranger here.
One very lucky guy.
"Carbery was pleased to hear this, he can emphatize that the bear was just behaving in a natural and predictable manner.
It wasnt the bears fault at all, he said. It was me dropping my guard and walking out into a situation that was already charged."
This is pretty much why we practically wiped out bears in the first place. So we wouldn't have to be on guard every time we stepped out our front door. So we wouldn't have to be worried about being killed by an animal 40 feet from our front door.
I guess in Canada even park rangers don’t have access to firearms.
They should make a movie out of this — maybe they can get Leonardo DiCaprio to play the lead.
It’s no different in South Side of Chicago and they blame Guns. /s
However, If it worked for keeping the Bears in check perhaps...
“I guess in Canada even park rangers dont have access to firearms.”
He was only 40 ft. from his house, and probably wasn’t thinking he needed a firearm to go into his yard.
Note to self: When living in Grizzly Country and you hear a noise outside, It’s best to look around BEFORE you go out.
He should have been prepared.

When you see a bear cub, best get out of Dodge. This poor man obviously tried.
Glad he’s still alive.
Looking at that picture, are you sure the bear didn’t do something else to him?
Must have been cubs somewhere close.
I vote for James Franco. He did fantastic work in 127 (?) Hours. :)
I bet you’re right though...it could make a good movie.
Quite possibly they were in one of his cherry trees.
“When you see a bear cub”
Freeze, find momma, and back away slowly keeping watch.
I have seen cubs in the woods, never got close enough to meet mom.
Yes, it is why they were almost extinct! Those who got here first had common sense, which seems to be none too common these days.

Glad hes still alive.

I’ve heard Grizzly Bears get particularly upset if you approach their young. Black Bears, not so much. Black Bears get upset if they think you’re muscling in on their food. Best to give both a wide berth.
