Dinesh D'Souza explains 'outrageous' Trump-Lincoln comparison

When Americans assess Donald Trump, a president who in many ways has broken the mold, comparisons don’t come easily. But Abraham Lincoln?

That’s the startling proposition illustrated in promotional posters for Dinesh D’Souza’s upcoming film “Death of a Nation,” which contends America is once again faced with an existential crisis.

In an interview with WND, D’Souza explained he is not asserting that Trump is Lincoln.

“We are saying there are situations that are eerily similar, the accusations against the two men are remarkably similar and Trump can take a page from the great emancipator,” D’Souza said.

The filmmaker, known for his successful election-timed films on Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton, said the situation comparable to Lincoln’s is the “crazy, feverish political climate.”(continued)

In terms of how the Democrats are behaving the comparison is apt. Refusing to accept the results of an election, quasi-secession in the guise of “Sanctuary” cities, States refusing to recognize Federal authority in matters of immigration and law, violence and overt sedition, all add up to similarity with how they reacted to Lincoln’s election in 1860. And Trump’s surprising poll numbers among black Americans must make them feel like we’re about to take away their slaves (again).

Trump is very different from Lincoln, who was “brooding and melancholy, philosophical.”

I think Trump is closer to that description than we think. The President is plenty philosophical about this country and he has brooded over it for years. I don't think he is melancholy because he is very able to keep his promises and make things better.

No comparison. Trump is much better.

Lincoln became a saint by being assassinated, just like JFK.

I call that the Martyr Syndrome.

Tends to happen with left-leaning types, too.

Also happens outside politics. My example is Ruffian, the great racemare, nonetheless highly overrated. Apparently because she broke down and died from a match race, she got the royal treatment.

President Trump has not, so far, exhibited any tendency to violate the constitution, to suspend habeas corpus, to arrest opposition legislators, to close newspapers, or to start war when there are peaceful alternatives.

I hope Desouza does not create a new mess that President Trump will have to clean up, pardon the expression.

Interesting way to look at it. The new Republican Party of Lincoln’s time was not conservative. One of its founders, Horace Greeley, published Karl Marx for years in his New York Tribune, the leading newspaper of its time (like the later NY Times was until recently).

If Trump was the dictator the Left claims he is, he would be doing all the things you listed

The MAIN difference between President Trump and all the others? Nobody owns him and all the other Washington DC politicians are. This scares the crap out of the Democrats, establishment Republicans and the main stream media. President Trump was a billionaire when he started and will be a billionaire when he leaves. How do you buy a billionaire?

I have watched very old youtubes of Trump. He talks about some of the same things then. Other countries roll us, nobody will stand up to them etc.

He finally has a chance to fix things that he has been talking about for years.

I agree with you on this. Trump, because of his twitchy Twitter finger and non-academic background, can come across as just another crazy New Yorker. But he’s very smart and I actually do think he has a basic idea of what the US is and how things should be here and, like Lincoln, he wants it to be that way. If he’s keeping a stiff upper lip and keeping on tweeting, that may be because of his wife, who is (hopefully) encouraging him.

Lincoln, also heavily ridiculed because he wasn’t in with the cool kids, was very similar.

D’Souza is a National Treasure.

I cannot wait until the movie comes out, written by a U.S. political prisoner.

“To compare” is to show the ways in which two (or more) things are similar. “To contrast” is to show the ways in which they are different. This can be done with any people, situations, topics. There are always ways in which A and B are similar; there are always way in which A and B are different.

So everyone needs to stop going hysterical about it.

The Lincoln-Kennedy comparisons come to mind.

Trump was born in 1946.
Lincoln was elected to the House of Representatives in 1846.

In 1965, Trump was attending Fordham University.
In 1865, Lincoln was shot in Ford’s Theatre.

When I was a girl in the 70s, we had “Lincoln-Kennedy Pennies,” with a little stamp of Kennedy’s face by Lincoln’s head. They came with a card that listed the various coincidences, most of which now escape me. Something about theaters and warehouses, and some confluences of dates and ages.

Lincoln was GOPe of the times.
From the article:
Lincoln, [D’Souza] pointed out, was surrounded by moderates who begged him to avert conflict by essentially giving up the mandate of the election.

“They basically said you should agree to extend the Missouri Compromise line all the way to the Pacific and permanently allow slavery south of it, and permanently ban slavery north of it,” D’Souza said.

Lincoln said no, arguing he had been entrusted with carrying out the people’s mandate, and he refused to give up the principles on which he had campaigned.

So, no.

I hope the movie is effective.

One difference that Trump enjoys is his wife, Melania. With all of the assaults from the Left, Trump endures because of the support he has from Melania. In my mind she is an angel and many like me adore her.

Lincoln’s wife, Mary, was described as the “female wild cat of the age.” This loss of control was not Mary’s fault. It was a medical condition called pernicious anemia which was a result of Vitamin B12 deficiency. B12 deficiency shrinks the brain, leading to a significant decline in cognitive function, paranoia and hallucinations.

Beef liver is a good natural source of B12.
