The question was asked on Social Media of what is the best rifle caliber for hunting deer. Supposed you were a newbie and was in the market, the following information may be helpful to you. You can obviously ask the folks running the gun stores and ranges.
The following answers comprises from many different levels of hunters/gun enthusiasts, take it with a grain of salt, this is from the internet poll.

There were other type of calibers but the above calibers repeatedly came up in the conversation.

There is no one perfect caliber for deer. Each caliber has advantages and disadvantages depending on the deer being hunted and the terrain presented. A .270, 7 mm, .308, or ‘06 is a versatile gun that will give acceptable performance in all cases. There might be a better, more specialized gun for each situation but the guns listed above would be more than adequate in every situation.
You can’t go wrong with 30-06.
You can download it to .243 territory with a 125-grain bullet or near 300 Winchester Magnum range.
Plus 30-06 ammo is available anywhere.

Yep. In the thick woods of northern Michigan I still use my brush-busting 30-06. When I hunted out in Kansas and North Dakota I was using a 270.
