HBO's 'Game of Thrones' prequel to begin filming in Ireland

While one “Game of Thrones” chapter is closing, another may be opening.

“Game of Thrones” characters have been bidding farewell to their beloved characters as filming for the eighth and final season wrapped this summer. But fans are optimistic about a prequel to the hit HBO show, which is reportedly set to film in Northern Ireland in October.

According to the Belfast Telegraph, filming for the new show will take place at Paint Hall studios in Belfast, where the original “Game of Thrones” series was shot.

“This is fantastic news for everyone at the studio - from the cast and the crew, right down to the riggers and the catering staff,” a Paint Hall source told the newspaper.

“Game of Thrones” author George R. R. Martin wrote about HBO moving forward with a pilot order in a June 11 blog post.

“To clarify, what we have here is a pilot order, not as yet a series order,” he wrote at the time about the project, which is being helmed by showrunner Jane Goldman. “Though of course we are all hoping that will follow.”

Unfortunately, “Game of Thrones” fans will still have to say goodbye to their favorite characters. Martin said no one from the original cast will reappear in the new show, which will predate their world by thousands of years.

Sounds interesting. Looking forward to seeing this pilot. Hope it works out and they can start another 8+ year run. I'm about to start watching the original again from the beginning.

GoT redefined what television could become in the age of the modern HDTV large screen home theater setup and America's shifting habit towards binge watching several episodes at leisure instead of single episodes at airtime.

Season 7.4's "Loot Train Battle" is one of television's greatest moments and underscores the struggle the box office today faces in selling movie tickets. There just isn't any reason to go to the movies. TV is so much better.

Here's hoping the prequel is the same quality production that GoT is.

Great point Drew. I use my 65” flat screen as my computer monitor and TV with just a sound bar and I’m happy with it. I’m typing this on with it. Haven’t been to a movie theater in at least 6 years although I do think about it from time to time.

Binge watching is the way I watch most TV series anymore. I have a TiVo and record several episodes before watching any of them.

The negative with HBO and similar — Netflix, AmazonPrime, Cable networks, etc. — is they have 6 to 12 episodes per year. That makes it difficult to recall what happened in a previous year.

I started GoT late, so I binged the first couple of seasons. Netflix and AP puts the entire season online at once, instead of dribbling out episodes. AP sometimes has the first episode, but takes months to ever release the full season.

“Game of Small Chairs?”

yeah, and the Iron Throne was only the Iron Ore Throne back then, too ...

“There just isn’t any reason to go to the movies. TV is so much better.”

there’s no question about it ... of course, not all TV, but the really good stuff on TV is WAY better than even the best of today’s movies. one of the things i like most about great TV series is that top notch actors get far greater opportunities for character development than in the movies ... also, for some reason, great TV series seem to use CGI the way it ought to be used, namely to create the physical universe only, and not as a substitute for dialog, story, and character ... GoT and The Expanse are two examples of CGI used to perfection ...

Sure there is,you are “out and about” with people.

I love going to the movies——but binge watch ALL TV shows now. I love it.

I was happy to see Amazon pick up The Expanse. There’s really not a lot of good tv on right now. Maybe 1 - 2 hours per night. Some summers are better than others that way.

Supposed to be about how the White Walkers came to be and other events.

Supposedly there will still be Starks.

TV can take more chances than movies. Movies are a multi-million dollar investment in one 2-3 hour show. If part of it sucks, they lose the whole thing. TV shows, even with a similar budget can have a bad episode or two and continue on and make corrections as they go.

I hear they had a pilot for “Game of Stools”, but it was really crappy.

Pack ‘em and stack ‘em but watch out for when they turn them upside down to fit 4 guys on them.

I’m guessing that they have to go with a prequel for a spinoff, because almost all the GoT characters get killed off in the war to come next season.

” GoT redefined what television could become in the age of the modern HDTV large screen home theater setup...”

There are big changes since the AT&T/Time Warner merger. HBO is going to become more like Netflix. They’ve stated it flat-out. To me that indicates no more big-budget, private-label productions and more focus on streaming distribution. The business model of HBO is changing.

The prequel happens thousands of years before GoT. Just the pilot so far but hopefully it will turn into a series. I'm sure it will if they do it as well as GoT.
