In their great wisdom, the United States Founders created the Electoral College to ensure the STATES were fairly represented. Why should one or two densely populated areas speak for the whole of the nation?
The following list of statistics has been making the rounds on the Internet. It should finally put an end to the argument as to why the Electoral College makes sense.
Do share this. It needs to be widely known and understood.
There are 3,141 counties in the United States.
Trump won 3,084 of them.
Clinton won 57.
There are 62 counties in New York State.
Trump won 46 of them.
Clinton won 16.
Clinton won the popular vote by approx. 2.5 million votes.
In the 5 counties that encompass NYC, (Bronx, Brooklyn, Manhattan, Richmond & Queens) Clinton received well over 2 million more votes than Trump. (Clinton only won 4 of these counties; Trump won Richmond)
Therefore these 5 counties alone, more than accounted for Clinton winning the popular vote of the entire country.
These 5 counties comprise 319 square miles.
The United States is comprised of 3,797,000 square miles.
When you have a country that encompasses almost 4 million square miles of territory, it would be ludicrous to even suggest that the vote of those who inhabit a mere 319 square miles should dictate the outcome of a national election.
Large, densely populated Democrat cities (NYC, Chicago, LA, etc.) DO NOT and SHOULD NOT speak for the rest of our country!
And...it's been verified and documented that those aforementioned 319 square miles are where the majority of our nations problems foment.
Now please pass this information on. I did.

Here's a site I found that says Trump won
2600 counties to Clinton's 500This seems to better correlate to actual results.
Another interesting factoid, Clinton won 88 of the highest populated 100 counties. Without those counties, she would have lost the "popular" vote by 11.5 million votes.
This makes a great argument for the Electoral College.

...we are a representative republic...
No, we AREN'T! We are a Constitutional Republic America's government is officially a constitutional federal republic.
However, the more important aspect of constituting America is Article 4, section 4 of the Constitution.
The United States shall guarantee to every State in this Union a
Republican Form of Government,
and shall protect each of them against Invasion; and against domestic Violence.

As one example: the county count is incorrect, though it does strongly favor Trump.
What bugs me about disseminating incorrect information is people (read Anti-Trumpers) will focus on the wrong data, while ignoring the otherwise good (and bigger points made).
Yes, the county count is wrong, but Trump still kicked butt in that category.

BTW — Trump won about 2,700 counties so the number is off by about 10%.

Bravo.
The irony is that if Clinton won the electoral and Trump the popular, this same eloquent analysis of the genius of our Founding Fathers would be equally attributed to Clinton. Of course this makes the left total hypocrites and sore losers since they want to ABOLISH the Electoral College.
BTW, I believe Clinton's much touted popular vote total is fraudulent by MANY millions.

Right. They could have just made their point by saying that, in terms of counties, the 2016 election was the most lopsided since 1984.
However, the point being made is fairly meaningless. Presidents are not elected by counties any more than they are elected by national popular vote. Neither figure is relevant.
To: The Pack Knight
Neither figure is relevant.

Correct except that this is a push/means toward trying to
use the popular vote as the basis for the election. JMO.

deport, thanks. I did see various articles with differing numbers, (which was one reason I was vague to not give a precise reference).
You have confirmed my original point, in that the count given in the posted piece was not accurate.
Thank you

What people don’t often realize is that the Presidential election is a contest for 50 individual states each “weighted” for their population. Using the EC system the Founders prevented one populace state from swinging the election away from the will of the other states.
We are a Republic for obvious reasons....Democracy is, in essence, mob rule....popularity, no matter how out of sync with societal norms, rules the day. Rule by whim!
A Republic is rule by law, long standing tradition, and reason. By design change is slow to insure the path is kept on the straight and narrow.

With as many distractions that people have nowadays, a Republic makes even more sense as a governing structure than it did 242 years ago.

"Ask someone on the Left why every state gets two and only two senators? Should California and New York get more, since they have more people? Since blacks only make up 13% of the total population, shouldnt they get only 13% Congressional representation and economic benefits?
You do not understand what makes our republic... We have a Union of several states, sovereign states. This union is of a Constitutional Republic form, not a representative form.
This means that by contract, the Constitution, gives each state a (2) senator representation equal amongst the several state. It is this state interest, not the people within the states, that makes up our union... a union that is a constitutional republic, not a representative republic.
It is why we have a Senate. A chamber that argues for the specific interests of the state and the union it is a member of. It is the Senate which makes us a Republic, not the House of Representatives.
The House, a chamber of representatives of the people at large sent by each states districts to secure the interest of the people of the several states to guard against any interests voted for by the Senate(the republic or union), that would be repugnant against the sovereign interests of the people of the states and their Constitutional protections.
This is all covered in the Federalist Papers and the notes from the Constitutional Convention of 1787.
Of course each chamber is recognized for whom there interests lay... for example:
States:
The Senate has judicial oversight and approval because the Justices for any federal appointments are made for the interest of the Republic(the states), or Senate, not the House. This is deliberate because the Constitution is a contract between the several states, not the people. The POTUS state of the union address is given in the Senate chamber because the President, as well as the entire Federal government, is an agent of the states, not the people. The President answers to the Senate/the-states not the people/the-house.
The Federal Government exists mainly for the protection of and to guarantee for every state a republican form of government... not the governing of individuals.
Each state has their own president (the governor) as well as a unique state constitution, legislature and judicial branch. Why?? Because each state is a separate sovereign nation state, a country of it's own self government, where most of these nation states border each other. No different than Poland, France, Germany, Italy... etc. Get the picture? The EU, The USA. Though each union is formed by different unique contracts, none-the-less, are still Unions.
The House:
Taxation originates in the house where it's impact is most felt by those who must pay the bills.
Articles of Impeachment, Power of Impeachment (a formal indictment by the house), is a check against executive branch abuse to use by the House if the people of the several states have decided that the Unions chief representative/executive and Commander, the POTUS, is acting against the iterests of the people, the union, the office or the Constitution... aka: treason, high crimes & misdemeanors and/or dereliction of duties. The Senate is then responsible to try & convict being the court that prosecutes it's unions CEO.
Of course the 17th Amendment destroyed our Republic by having Senators directly elected by popular vote. The Senate and House reps are now one big House of Representatives that both answer directly to the entire state electorate and the interest of the people and is the main reason our Federal government is no longer functioning as intended. There is no longer a check and balance between the House and Senate, the interest of the Constitutional Republic vs the interest of the caucus-mob and raiders of the treasury ... the people. Our once limited Federal government has been corrupted to serve only the interests of the people/mob. The interests of the Republican union and the Republic that our Constitution created are now gone, desolved by the 17th Amendment.
Repeal the 17th. The
