The 70s had Archie Bunker and his chair.
Apparently the 2010s will have Roseanne and her couch (again), as her new-old show debuted to a huge audience (unexpectedly).
While nostalgia was expected to bring in eyeballs, no one predicted such a huge turnout on premiere night for the blue-collar family sitcom with a Donald Trump-supporting protagonist, especially among the younger demographic. But then, few predicted that Trump would become the Republican nominee and would win the presidential election when he first announced his candidacy. - Deadline Hollywood
And thats a good thing, as we can use some of the wisdom from the throwback years:
Ah yes, those were the days.

I don’t know why anyone suggests the ratings were a surprise. These retro shows have been producing big ratings. Now hers were certainly impressive, but she had a very successful show before and it’s done well in reruns. So a reset should have worked.
I missed it (will watch a week out when ABC streams it) but I have been watching her old show on You Tube.
And now I remember why I loved The Connors so much back then!
To have Roseanne be a Trump supporter is the cherry on top.
I wasn’t a fan of her show the first time around, but one of our channels has been running several episodes a day on it and I’ve watched some of them. They are now a hoot. I’ve only seen clips of the new show, but will stream it when it becomes available.
Apparently the numbers were enormous, highest ratings for a sitcom in years. Nobody expected that. And they were particularly strong in young demographic which has no real nostalgia factor. It's a real mystery to the hollywood crowed.
But then, nobody in Hollywood can seem to figure out why every single preachy George Clooney left wing propaganda-fest movie bombs while every single overtly christian movie does "unexpectedly" huge box office. These are real head scratchers to them so their answer is to try again with Clooney and supress the christian films. The obvious approach.
2) The last season of Rosanne was bizarre to say the least, with the rags to riches "Beverly Hillbillies" lifestyle turning out to be a fantasy, but in the finale we find out that the reality was that Dan had died of a heart attack. Had a "Who Shot J.R.?" feel too it.
3) Rosanne will eventually wobble back to the Left.
Any comedy show that mocks liberals is going to have a huge advantage. There’s just so much material out there that nobody’s using.
“3) Rosanne will eventually wobble back to the Left.”
If she wants to keep her job, she will.
The show is written by libs. Just like “30 Rock”, written by libs with the BEST right-wing comedy ever on TV. It was shocking.
watching Baldwin play the role of a super right-wing guy who gets everything right was great !
Laurie Metcalf played a leftist moonbat -perfectly-! She had the wiley eyes of someone who was ready to murder, just yelling and insulting and getting borderline emotional at every line was great to watch.
The tranny kid is tough to watch. I wanna punch that kid so hard.
Not just the new ones. People have given up Cable TV in droves and gone to the antenna. We're watching the actual old shows.
Situation comedy is about respecting that different people have different weaknesses and different views. It's about laughing about these variations together; it's about acceptance. Modern "comedy" has become The Thought Masters demanding correct thought and perfection by their standards.
Add to that, TV's violence is beyond disgusting. That constant barrage of violence isn't even close to entertaining anymore.
If Rosanne can get people to laugh with each other instead looking down at each other, good for her!

It’s truly the only TV I watch unless there’s an unsolved murder mystery to solve.
I’m a ‘newbie’ to shows like CSI (all of them!) and Blue Bloods and Law & Order.
Of course, I NEVER missed an episode of Magnum, P.I. Wherever we were in the world, we three Army Gals (still my BFFs 30+ years later!) would set aside Wednesday nights to watch Selleck, do our nails, gab on the phone and have a glass of wine. :)
Shell either get momentum going and show people how its done (fighting back with humor) or shell succumb to Hollywood pressure and do a 180 like just about everyone else
I agree with you about "an unsolved murder mystery to solve". The shows are fine if they're about solving the crime, as Law and Order or Murder She Wrote (though one has to wonder if Jessica Fletcher was secretly a mass murderer with all the murders she encountered <^..^>) or Colombo were. Leverage is a recent Cable TV series that could've done a few more years, it's so good. And the first two years of WKRP!!! The turkey episode, the battling mascots etc...ohmygosh!
LOL! Our age is showing. TV faves and no longer wearing High Heels ala Melania! :)
Gloria: “Gee, that’s convoluted logic!” Archie: Yes and that’s just the kind of straight thinkin’ I’m tryin’ to get across here!”
