I put in an engineered Maple floor. It sucks. It shrank up and there are gaps. I put it in the kitchen too. Had a small leak that got into the padding under the Maple. Fungus/etc’ It will all be torn out when the weather gets better. Going to Slate!

Gary Sullian At Home show every weekend. He knows everything, seems like people can get through, and if he doesn't know something, a listener calls in with a good solution.
Good luck whatever you do.

If you decide on laminate, do not spare the change. Put the best underlayment you can find under it and purchase prime laminate.
Lots of youtube vids explaining how to do it if you are doing it yourself.

Did the flooring acclimate in the house for a few weeks first? did you use roofing felt under it? Was the maple actually dry when you bought it? that would cause a lot of problems. I have Larch floors with minimal shrinking, and my temps up here swing 110 degrees each year, but the house only goes from 50-80 inside.

I’ve done laminate a few times. You’ll kill yourself doing it alone. One person needs to stay down fitting, measuring, and fitting, the other cutting and helping fit. I’ll never do it again.
I bet it’s your wife who wants it isn’t it?

I know a couple of brothers who live around your way who may be able to help you out. Can't recall their names at the moment, but here's a photo...

Dont do laminate. If its for you, use best hardwood available and have it professionally installed.

Any hard wood has to acclimate to the climate in your house before installation. 2 weeks siting in you house should do it. May take three depending on the situation.
The floor does not suck. You installed it with to much moisture in it and it shrank. Thats what wood does when it is not acclimated to your home.
