Everybody does Throwback Thursday because it’s fun to remember, for better or worse, the way we were: the fashion, food, politics and culture of by-gone eras. Until last year I thought of it less as nostalgia and more as a history of a dying culture. Now I can view it as a chronicle of America in the process of making itself great again. See what you think.

I’m so old that some of these old things are new again, like TV rabbit ears, fallout shelters/drills (thank you Obama - and what happened to that Trump/Putin collusion?), vinyl and turntables. Perhaps they are like sex and leveraged buyouts: every generation thinks they’ve discovered them.
The things I miss most from this compilation are Borders bookstores, especially the one in Ann Arbor which pioneered the bookstore Koffee Klatch Korner Kliché, and Burger Chef – although I hate to think what their delicious burgers and fishwiches would have devolved into by now.
So here’s my first entry from the way, way back machine: remember when (last week I believe) the gals on The View diagnosed Mike Pence with an unspecified mental illness?
"Like I said before, it's one thing to talk to Jesus," Behar said. "It's another thing when Jesus talks to you."
"Exactly. That's different!" Hostin said enthusiastically.
"That's called mental illness if I'm not correct. Hearing voices," Behar continued.
Well my goodness, look who’s exhibiting signs of mental illness now – Oprah!

Shoot, Oprah would be perfect; she pushes so many of the right buttons - not white, female (or possibly “other”), #MeToo, and Meryl Streep thinks she’d be great, even though God talks to her. And God knows Meryl, bless her heart,

We had a Burger Chef near my house when I was growing up in Virginia Beach. I can't speak for others, but the food at that particular was awful. It was so bad that I never bothered trying a different store.
To this day, it is the second-worst fast food I have ever had the displeasure of eating.
OK, I’ll bite. What was the worst?
It was a Hardees in Culpeper, Virginia. I’ve usually had good experience at Hardees, but this one was a serious outlier/anomaly. I actually ate there twice, thinking that my first trip must have simply been on a bad day - but the second experience was actually worse than the first. Dirty dining area, rude staff and extremely slow service - and the food was simply awful.
It has long since closed, but it lives on in my memory as the worst place I have ever eaten a meal.
I don’t see anything throwback about that.
Throw up, maybe.
Enjoyed the video. Concerning Fuller Brush and Robert Hall...
The Fuller Brush company went bankrupt and was put into receivership. An elderly old caretaker was brought in to watch the store as the bankruptcy proceedings unwound. The guy made changes, brought the company around, and took it out of bankruptcy. They were eventually bought by CPAC, a photochemical and silver recovery company in St Louis. The acquisition made little sense for CPAC, but there you go.
CPAC also bought a photochemical company called Albert that had been a fringe operation for decades. They turned the name Albert backwards to form Trebla and became a key player in that market.
As for Robert Hall, Stan Freberg wrote a great radio jingle for them that played to the tune of “O, Tannenbaum” and went like this:
O, Robert Hall, O, Robert Hall,
O, how we love your parking lot...
...sale.
HMM. I guess you have to hear it for yourself, but it was hilarious.

We still have a “White Mana” in neighboring Jersey City, NJ; it was a round burger joint featured in the 1939 World’s Fair building, designed so one person could take your order, cook/serve your food, and work the register. Not many left...
