SOUTH KOREA — Thousands of miles away from home, U.S. troops in South Korea marked the annual holiday of Thanksgiving on Thursday.

A traditional meal including turkey, mashed potatoes, and stuffing was served to soldiers at Camp Humphreys, which is just 60 miles from the border with North Korea.

The U.S. soldiers said the Thanksgiving meal reminded them of home.

“This Thanksgiving meal today prepared for us is absolutely amazing. They’ve really outdone themselves. I do have family back out AT home. I have a wife and two beautiful daughters. I miss them very much but I’m here now and I’m making the best of it while I can,” said U.S. Army Specialist at 2nd Armoured Brigade Combat Team, Jerred Lloyd.

U.S. Sergeant Michal Yin, who was in charge of the festive meal for his fellow soldiers, said about 60 turkeys were cooked for over a thousand soldiers and their families.....

When I was a young USAF dependent at some bases we used to have our Thanksgiving dinner with the troops in the chowhall. Every table had a family mixed with some single troops.

It always felt like a big family and we all felt good.

I celebrated three Thanksgiving in strange places in the Army. One of them was New Jersey.

Thanksgiving 1969 I spent 8 hours humping F-102’s at Suwon Air Base, just north of Osan. Even our small chow hall cooked turkey and I got my fill while on break. This small connection to our homes and families was a welcome respite from the cultural shock of life in the far east in those days. The guys that worked to feed us daily are to be commended for going out of their way to make their comrad’s turkey day special.

Thank you so very much for serving, we would not have this great nation that so many in this world depend upon if it was not for your sacrifices.

So many years ago,I remember being a young man in the military a long way from home, but come Thanksgiving we had a super meal in the chow hall. It was almost always good food, but on Thanksgiving & Christmas they went all out & it was really special. Makes a difference when a young service man is so far from home. God Bless our troops this holiday season!

You wouldn’t know Korea now from what I understand. If anything, they’re further along than we are.

My first Thanksgiving was in tech school 1976. My second, 1977, I was on Alert down in a Titan II ICBM complex in a farm field in Kansas.

SAC had given the Titan II Wings a waiver and allowed family out to the sites. My MFT (the other enlisted on crew) and I were single but both our Commander and Deputy were married so their wives drove the 40+ miles out to the complex loaded with Thanksgiving dinner. My MFT and I went topside and let the ladies on site (they had to leave their car outside of the fence) and helped carry all the stuff downstairs.

My Commander’s wife was a fantastic cook and we stuffed ourselves while sitting 40 feet underground with a nine megaton warhead 160 feet away. I bet those two civilian women remembered that as the Thanksgiving they celebrated while pulling Alert fighting the Cold War.

That was my most memorable Thanksgiving.
