Movie Review of "Let There Be Light"
Gun Watch ^ | 30 October, 2017 | Dean Weingarten

I saw the movie at an afternoon showing at the Harkins Theater in Yuma, Arizona on 28 October, 2017. I knew the movie dealt with theme of a prominent atheist converting to Christianity.

The movie is not an action packed drama, so well loved of Hollywood of late. It deals in personal interrelations and faith.  I suppose you you could say it is a "chick flick".

The opening scene, where the main protagonist "debates" with a Christian academic, is powerful, because it shows the primary value left to secularists: hedonism.

I suspect many will be able to relate to this scene. I found the film engaging and moving. But I did so because many of the actions connected to my personal history. I was an acting agnostic/atheist for 40 years before I came to Christ.

It is an intensely personal experience.  Most Christians can tell you their story.  I have doubts about the movie resonating with people who have not experienced it.

I found Sean Hannity's limitied time on screen to be well done and believable.

It is a film worth seeing, but it did not keep me on the edge of my seat. Instead, I found tears running from my eyes.

I would like to see Christians support the film, if only to encourage more Christian oriented films. They need not be as openly proselytizing as this film.

I would like to see a movie made of "The Discovery and Conquest of Mexico" by Bernal Diaz.

That would be a guy flick. Dozens of battles, intrigue, cannibalism, and human sacrifice. With Christians, however flawed, triumphing over pagan warriors both brave and cruel. Better ideas were a significant part of the Christian victory.

Maybe Mel Gibson could direct it.

It is worth watching.

Better than "God is not Dead".

Not as good as "Courageous".

I thought Kevin Sorbo died in the first movie "God's Not Dead"?

Does this sequel deal with his resurrection?

“I found tears running from my eyes. I would like to see Christians support the film, if only to encourage more Christian oriented films.”

We saw the movie today, and we experienced the tears as well. I hope many make a point of seeing it, not only to support faith-based entertainment, but because the movie is excellent.

A sequel to “Apocalypto”.

Not a typo, a grammatical error.

Previews suggest incredibly boring, preachy movie. I will pass.

I’ll be taking my favorite “chick”, Mrs. moovova, to see it.

I would like to see a movie made of "The Discovery and Conquest of Mexico" by Bernal Diaz.

I have it! I read it! In hardback! Supposedly of questionable authenticity, dunno. Cetainly memorable for the "tough guy" attitude of Cortez and company.

He landed with troops, horses, and cannon, and played "Good cop, bad cop" against an arrayed enemy with the horses and cannon, announcing that he was trying to keep them under control, you see.

Another scene I remember is atop a pyramid at a gory sacrificial altar, where Cortez tells Montezuma, "I'm surprised a man of your intelligence indulges in this nonsense. Why don't you tear down this altar and put up a statue of the Virgin Mary." ... the High Priest remarks, "I told you we shouldn't bring him up here." ...

As I remember it!

It clearly was written by Diaz, and he clearly was a footsoldier of Cortez.

People have questioned how well he remembered, or if he made stuff up. But he is unquestionably the best source we have.

Here is my review of his book in the American English translation:

Cortez and Montezuma were both Machiavellian “princes” of the first order.

I saw the movie—weak film—sloppy work. A real turkey—sad movie could have been better with better writing and directing. Sean did well—playing himself. I wanted to like the film—but it just failed on several levels.
