Some concealed carrier that are into comfort carry will usually carry a pistol with a single stack vs a dual stack (more capacity).
Getting back to the title of this article, its not about just having lots of ammo, but the situation requires that you may need it. Plus the idea of using a gun for self defense is not to kill your attacker, but to make them stop attacking.
Now we are back to the original question, how many rounds do you need to stop an attacker? According to Massad Ayoob he states: switch from 5-6 round revolvers to 15-18 or 20 round semi automatics; 5-6 rounds was usually enough but usually isnt always. Massad was referring to law enforcement employment but falls into personal defense as well.
So the consensus is that the more rounds you have the better to prepare for most gunfight situations. When you look into the hits ratios of our law enforcements that were involved in these shootouts, its not good. (12% to 19%, unless someone knows of a more updated version from the FBI & NYPD) Yes, while under stress these LEOs will shoot more than in a training environment. With that in mind, most lawfully concealed carrier will probably be expending lots of rounds in a self defense situation. Read the rest of the "how many rounds do I need for concealed carry" story here. What about you all, how many?
Glock 19...15 plus 1 in the chamber....
Minimum ONE.
How many you need is how many it will hold, and still be easily concealable and comfortable. Your only real ally is surprise.
If it’s not comfortable you won’t carry it, and then for sure you won’t have enough rounds. My theory is you need to get the hell away from whatever the problem is. Not have a raging battle.
an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure...
It depends. As many as I can conveniently carry.
Try 3 if that don’t work keep adding one more until successful.
As many as your gun will hold. Maybe extra.
Most defensive encounters involve 3 to 5 shots fired. Practice is very important as most handguns never see a thousand rounds fired through them.
Six consecutive rounds in a six inch target at 15 yards consistently is unusually good
This eventually takes us into the reliability vs. firepower debate. The revolver holds 5-6 rounds but is much more reliable. The semi can hold up to 18 in a double stack magazine but is not as reliable, especially when carried by someone who doesn’t shoot and/or clean their gun very often.
Nov 4 is “Carry your M4 to work day” (antifa)....
I carry a compact Star .45 with 7/1 and 7 more in my purse.
My ammo of choice is the Federal Hydra-Shok which is a hollow-point.
15 rounds should be enough.
That ought to about do it ...
I'm not preparing for a gunfight - I'm planning on high-tailing it out as quickly as possible.
Half-dozen rounds should be more than enough to get my butt out of harms way. I'm not sticking around.
It depends on hind sight.
My .45 auto is usually in my safe, but my .25 auto is usually in my pocket; nine pills deliverable.
Mouse gun beats no gun.
You might want to carry a rifle as well ... unless you plan to bash the perp over the head with an ammo can.
