Check out this crazy Century Arms AK-74 explosion! It’s a good thing this guy was wearing good eye protection or that could have been a nasty accident.
Malfunctions sometimes happen when shooting. Most of the time, they are relatively minor. Sometimes, they cause spectacular explosions.
That slow motion replay is pretty cool: you can see the dust cover fly off and the magazine come apart.
This is why it’s a good idea to wear eye protection and gloves when shooting. Though the shooter appears shocked and surprised, he does not seem to be seriously injured. See the full AK-74 explosion footage here.

Looks like it fired out of battery.
If he reloads his own ammo, he may have put a smidgen too much in one, or a bunch, and the metal in the weapon’s chamber just could not take it any more...........................
If it were the design, the AK would not be the most produced firearm of all time.
Looking at the slow motion, on the kaboom round the charging handle didn’t move at all, which means no pressure at the gas block. So either the bolt didn’t fully lockup, or the bolt locking lugs or barrel locking recesses failed, resulting in the bolt being driven backwards, leaving the bolt carrier (and its attached charging handle) behind.
Century Arms ‘quality’ strikes again.

You can see the bottom being blown out of the magazine from the breech pressure release.
That probably saved his face.
This is nothing new. USA made century guns have been blowing up for years (RAS47 and C39). Rob and AKOU has covered this problem for some times.

If you want a cheap AK, buy a Yugo NPAP or Romanian WASR.
Maybe some of the SOG planted “hot” ammo made it from North Vietnam to the surplus market.

I’ve got some .45acp ammo with 1917 headstamp.It still fires like it was made last week.

Yes,I’d have to go check but I think Remington loaded it.Got several boxes of the stuff given to me with an original 1911 that a family friend carried in France in WW1.
This happened about four years ago. Century Arms blamed headspace.
I thought it looked like a double charge of powder.

Eye protection, yes. Glove material can accompany “accidental” metal into a wound, complicating recovery. Maybe those chain-mail kitchen gloves for filleting?
