The push toward a cashless society is becoming more of a shove. Before today I had never heard of “The Visa Cashless Challenge”, but after reading about it I have to say that I am quite alarmed. Visa is trying to “encourage” businesses to go cashless, and one of the ways that they will be doing this is by “awarding up to $500,000 to 50 eligible US-based small business food service owners who commit to joining the 100% cashless quest”. The food industry is still one of the last bastions where cash is used very heavily, and so it makes sense that Visa would want to target that segment. Of course the more people that use cards to pay for meals, the more money that Visa will make.
When I go to restaurants, I almost always use cash, and I know a lot of other people that very much prefer to use cash in those situations as well. But if Visa has their way, soon all of us will be forced to use some form of digital payment instead. The following is an excerpt from the press release that Visa issued about this new “challenge”…

By contrast, federal statutes do not require that someone who is not a pre-existing creditor must accept currency or coins as payment for goods or services. Private businesses may formulate their own policies on whether to accept cash unless state law requires otherwise.
!% years ago i used to never read my debit card statements i just stuck them in a draw.
One night while bored i decided to go through them and discovered that my fav local restaraunt/bar had double charged me multiple times over the course of a year or more.

Agreed. I had a airline employee tell me that they get away with the ‘cashless’ scam because they take the money before there is a ‘debt’ ( a stretch in my opinion) but after one has eaten and the debt in fact exists, it would seem hard to argue with the notation on the currency. set it on the table and leave. Their ‘policy’ isn’t law.

Incorrect. They don't have to make a SALE, but once a sale is made, they must take it.
Reason why a lot of gas stations advertise on signs much lower prices per gallon if you pay in cash.

Nope. They are free to not take cash.
Cash tips may not all get reported to the IRS.
Just one of the many reasons cash is being eliminated.
Tracking your every purchase being another.

The restaurants that fall for this, will proceed to fall off of a cliff.
Also:
I can smell the band's no-antiperspirant armpits all the way to 2017.
And if everyone paid cash, prices might actually drop and the employers might be able to hire more people for better service.
These restaurants will need to keep return buckets handy.
Doubt it, but it probably has an RFID chip in it, so they could probably get a snapshot of your position whenever you walk past a reader whose take they have access to.
So much for cash being legal tender for all debts, public and private.
Wait until the power goes out for a few days. Cash will be king.
They have to accept cash. They don’t have to accept cards. This is interfering with the businesses rights.
If the business wants to do it they have to make their policy very clear, including their policy on the customer who didn’t read the policy and doesn’t have a card and wants to pay with cash.
If they make their policy quite clear, I’ll go there. Otherwise, no.
I will not go to any restaurant that goes cashless.
