What do you do when you realize you may be too conservative to be a libertarian?
Austin Petersen, best known for running for the Libertarian Party presidential nomination in 2016, is giving the Republican Party a try. Advocating pro-life and pro-Constitution values, Petersen is challenging incumbent Sen. Claire McCaskill in Missouri for the 2018 midterm elections.
His decision came after thousands of phone calls reaching out directly to his supporters, who overwhelmingly urged him to run as a Republican, Petersen explained on Wednesdays Pat & Stu.
I decided to take their advice because theyre the ones who are putting all of their money and their time and their energy into these campaigns, he said of his supporters.
Even though Republicans hold Congress and the White House, they havent managed to fulfill platform promises like repealing the Affordable Care Act. Petersens main mission is to join his voice to conservative senators clamoring for real reform.
Im running because I want to go in there and help people like Ted Cruz and Mike Lee and Rand Paul, he said.
He'd be a great Senator. The kind of guy we need in Washington.
He’s pretty late to the party...
Better late than never.
And we welcome all advocates of small, limited government. He’s a LOT better than McCaskill.
(And young, too.)
Satan is better than McCackles.
I’m embarrassed every time I hear her.
Some are, some aren’t. It’s like the word “liberal”. It’s been distorted to mean Socialist, or more recently Marxist-Leninist. I’m still registered as a Republican but stopped identifying myself as such when I came to understand that the people who run the party are Chamber of Commerce Democrats who use the words “freedom” and “liberty” but mean none of it. I want the least interference in my life, the least regulation of commerce, a police presence focused on the violent among us, people in political power who don’t want it but know someone who does is the alternative, and a military that isn’t stretched so thin round the planet that the homeland is at risk.
I’d listen to him. Just what if he gets the nomination?
I don’t get all the FR hatred for libertarianism.
I’ve been burned and attacked many times for suggesting that libertarian and republican philosophy are closely aligned, at least if you separate the social issues and the evident GOP eagerness to impose our values on others by force.
Are you telling me you don’t approve of using the police to enforce seat belt laws, the hate crime of the week and arresting men every time some woman makes an accusation that doesn’t have an ounce of credibility?
Yeah, no. If we want a social leftist, McCaskill is already there.
Dad said he was a Libertarian Party member in the 90s, but he disagreed with some of their platforms — such as open borders and drugs...
Funny, I haven't see any Cruz or Lee supporters on his campaign team. On the other hand, I talked to the former "youth outreach coordinator" for uber RINO Mark Kirk's campaign (who proudly marched in the gay pride parade for him) and she is THRILLED about having more "progressive" Republicans like Austin Petersen, and has been bubbling about an upcoming rally for him.
Interesting how that works, doesn't it?
Fair enough. And I don't get all the "Bible belivin' evangelical tea parters" who love candidates who promote gay marriage, abortion, and wiping Israel off the map.
bttt.
I will be happy to return the favor to him.
I am "PERSONALLY" a big fan of his and believe he will make a great Senator. But I have no constitutional authority to vote for him, so I will instead be helping to elect another Republican.
Being a good "constitutionalist" who believes in "liberty", I'm sure he will understand my "personal" support.
“I’m personally...”, the ultimate in political weaselry. That was the old Democrat stance when they used to try to appeal to pro-life voters, “I’m personally...”
Confront jackasses like this Peterson with replies like this, “I’m personally in favor of infanticide, but I wouldn’t dare impose my militant pro-abort views on the electorate and would have to vote pro-life.”
Like I said, I will be happy to tell Austin Petersen that I "personally" support his candidacy but since I cannot impose my views on others, I will instead help to elect a different Republican.
Peterson should be running against McCaskill, in the Democrat primary. He’s probably to her left.
