A Goose Quacked And Pecked At A Cop’s Car. When He Followed Her, He Couldn’t Believe What He Saw!

Officer James Givens has served with the Cincinnati Police Department for over 26 years, but has never quite experienced anything like this before. He was sitting in his patrol car in a parking lot when he got an unexpected visitor. A goose came up to his car and started pecking on the side of it. He threw food out for her, thinking that’s what she wanted, but she didn’t take it.

Ducks quack. Geese honk.

She was studying a second language. Maybe she self-identified as a duck.

Maybe she self-identified as a duck.

That would be species dysphoria.

How dreadful!

As you found out feeding wildlife is not good idea.

Bears are even worse.

Don’t feed wild animals unless you’re willing to put up with the problems.

You are correct pigeons are rats with wings. Geese are big rats with wings.

We have plenty of geese in Lexington, Kentucky, and I suspect they no longer migrate, but stay here all year round. Since they are Canada geese, I have joked that somebody needs to check and make sure they have green cards. The first time I saw a pair of them with babies, I thought, “Oh no, anchor goslings!”

speaking of intelligence in birds:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AVaITA7eBZE

Our brain is much larger than even a chimp’s brain. A lot more of our head is brain. A lot more of a chimp’s head is mouth.

Plus, we eat meat, and start its digestion by cooking it first. This frees more energy for our brain.

Then. we have hands. Beautiful hands. We can manipulate things better than most of our fellow advanced animals (I’m thinking of birds and the other mammals).

Then, there is our throat. We can speak. And, with words, there are ideas. Abstractions. And, with abstraction, there is reason.

Finally, there is our muscles. Our muscles are weak as compared to chimp’s. Our senses aren’t that good either. This means we cannot rely on our strength. Our ancestors needs tools to hunt, and also to hunt in packs. Hunting in packs that included wolves (who became dogs).

You’ll find hands like ours on some animals, and throats like ours on some birds. But, our combination and our enormous brain sets us apart.

The advanced animals are terrific, as is the entirety of creation. But we are the pinnacle of creation.

Disaffectionately known around here as “sky carp”— with a great many similarities to the loathsome fish.

Neighbor had one,”Roscoe”. You could not come on that property with out being charged at and honked at. Never nipped but was intimidating if you weren’t familiar with him

The goose needs to be careful about the "serve" part.

When I was 14, I was in the Boy Scouts in Maryland, and to raise money we were tasked with selling light bulbs door to door. (Seemed a very strange thing to sell then, but now, seems eminently sensible!)

Another Scout and I approached a farm, and as we entered the yard and walked up to the door, a goose appeared and stood defiantly in between us and the door, perhaps 20 yards away.

The other Scout would not go up to the door and said “I’m not going up there...those things are worse than a mean dog!” I said “Geez, it’s only a darned goose!” and marched forward.

The goose immediately began walking towards me, and I paused. There was something in its demeanor that gave me that pause.

But instead of stopping when I stopped, it began to walk faster towards me, then when it got to about 5 yards away, it spread its wings, extended its head and neck until they were parallel to the ground, and opened its mouth in a wide vee.

And then, as if that wasn’t quite unnerving on its own, it let out this hissing sound, and accelerated into a run directly at me!

I turned tail and ran, and that thing bit me so hard on the calf that it raised a blood blister!

(I am laughing to myself as I remember this!)

It gave up the chase when I exited the yard, and the other Scout looked at me with wide eyes and said “See? I told you so!” as I examined the back of my leg!

For the rest of my life, I have had a healthy respect for geese! My wife and I were walking on a trail one day near a lake and came across a Canadian Goose in the middle of the trail that stood there in that same defiant way I had seen that other goose do, almost as if it was saying: “I ain’t moving. You come any closer...”

Needless to say, I said “Nope. Let’s find another trail...”

A friend’s workplace was surrounded by geese. One of her coworkers got close enough to get pecked and it drew blood. According to the company’s policy that counted as a workplace accident so he had to get drug tested. How stoned do you have to be to get attacked by a goose?

A small peak into the brains/thought processes of our domesticated (and non) animals. Fascinating. They appear to understand more than we give them credit for. Mother goose clearly understood this humanoid could save her baby.

Born and raised in Cincinnati. Plenty of Appalachian migrants with their accent. People from North of Cincy think it is a Southern city and people from South of Cincy consider it a Northern city.

I never realized people from Cincinnati sound so southern. Right on the KY border so I suppose it makes sense, but never realized that.
Sports announcer Al Michaels has an interesting book our, fairly recently. He was working in Hawaii, IIRC, and got his break in the major leagues announcing Cincinnati Reds games.

When he was house-shopping his real estate agent told him that the best place to get a good deal on a residence was just across the river from Cincinnati, in Kentucky. But he balked at that; he was perfectly happy getting an Ohio address, but as a Jew from New York he wasn’t ready to tell his friends and family he was living in Kentucky.

Uh, that is a pretty isolated area for a male/female police team to be parked doing nothing. Just sayin.
