Some are great shooters. Some suck. Hate the triggers, but they work and have been a buddies favorite flavor of rifle for a few years. I do not know how many he has.
200 yards is the best that I can do with my M91/30, but that’s due to my eyes, not the rifle.

I do believe, at those distances, at that time, rifles like this or the Enfield were not intended to be fired, at that range, at individual targets. But a company of men with such rifles could severely impact the moral of a formation of troops at 1,000 yards.

It has been said that, in WWII, the Germans had the best “hunting rifle”, the English had the best “combat rifle”, but the US had the best “target rifle” (03-A3, I presume). I had an interest in Enfields as I hunted deer with a Jungle Carbine as a boy. I read that the older Enfields had a sight on the side that was graduated in thousands of yards to be used like artillery. If Intel said a group of Germans were massing for an attack “over the hill” that orders for firing at a bearing and range for a Regiment or smaller could be used to discourage that behavior. Can you imagine a rain of several thousand “random bullets” dropping in from a mile away? Sort of a WWI version of Spectre.

Bought one at Alamo Gun Range and Shop in Naples, Florida for $225 in December. Came with bayonet and jug of cosmolene.
It is in pretty good shape, tho there is a wedge of wood replaced at the bottom of the stock at the butt plate.
They had a rack with 20-30 to choose from sitting out. Maybe more in back.

I read stories of Marines during WW1 in the trenches hitting targets out to 800yds on average with the Springfield 1903 over open iron sights.

Ammo is not that cheap either - $.40 a round.Fortunately I have three spam cans of 1979 Kyrgyz stuff.
Well, that was the more traditional use of infantry fire for a long time IIFC. I think possibly due the the fact that developing the skill to hit a target at any long distance required resources or needs that the average city dwelling European didn’t have; the occasional professional hunter or aristocrat might be a great shot. So given a limited amount of time and training it would make more sense to use a technique that allowed a bunch of conscripts with a few weeks practice to be deadly at 500 yards or so. I know there were exceptions but the Russians were arming and sending to the front tens of thousands of troops on a low budget quickly.
I seem to recall, but can’t find it, that a British observe in the Civil War remarked that the average American soldier would be a sharpshooter in most European armies.
No matter if you love 'em or hate 'em, they always get attention at the range when you touch 'em off.

Followed by “I’m blind!” Something with that long of a barrel can have a large muzzle flash.
Friend has a PSL. Semi auto. Great for deer, sucks to be by him at the range.
