I like the Big Ugly Gun.

Some are great shooters. Some suck. Hate the triggers, but they work and have been a buddies favorite flavor of rifle for a few years. I do not know how many he has.

200 yards is the best that I can do with my M91/30, but that’s due to my eyes, not the rifle.

I do believe, at those distances, at that time, rifles like this or the Enfield were not intended to be fired, at that range, at individual targets. But a company of men with such rifles could severely impact the moral of a formation of troops at 1,000 yards.

Check ‘Armslist’ for your locale. I see them all the time.

Always meet at a public location. I like Walmart parking lots.

I read stories of Marines during WW1 in the trenches hitting targets out to 800yds on average with the Springfield 1903 over open iron sights.

The Finnish sniper Simo Hayah used a Finn manufactured version of the Mosin Nagant with iron sights. He seemed to very well with it.

Every now and then I put on a Mosin shoot at my range. Prone, slow-fire from 200, 300 and 600 yds at pistol targets. Lotsa fun!

Some of the comments are enough to make a grown man cry! The 7.62X54R is not a heavy recoil rifle and is as mild as the .30-06 with similar ballistics and muzzle energy. The ammo is still dirt cheap in the Polish, Romanian, Ukrainian, Russian 440 round spam cans with the worlds largest can opener. Gives new meaning to C rations. The M38 (M44 without bayonet)was the short barreled version for tankers and support troops in vehicles and the muzzle flash is from all that unburnt powder designed for the 7.62X54R ballistics and powder burn rate for the longer barrel. Unfortunately our local range does not allow steel core surplus ammo so we can't play with them at the range unless using new ammo or reloads with lead ball ammo.

They are accurate rifles and if you end up with one with good rifling they are extremely accurate. Many early rifles were made in the United states under contract by Remington for the Russian Czar and than rearsenaled/refinished for WWII and if you have a hexagonal receiver there is a good chance it may have been made originally in America @ 1917. The receivers are very strong and will take a lot of abuse. For those buying milsurp rifles early on (Mausers, Yugos, Nagants) in the 1980's and 1990's, it were a fun time to collect great shooters at ridiculous prices. Back when a brick of .22LR was $10, a Turkish M38 Mauser was $25 and 1,000rnds of 8mm ammo was $50 delivered at your door. After a few elections and SHTF scares everyone wanted one and now those that bought crates of rifles are laughing to the bank. At one time you could buy a crate of 10 Mosin Nagant rifles and thousands or rounds of ammo for less than the cost of one new Remington 700.
