Professor Jennifer Harvey took to the New York Times yesterday to ask: Are We Raising Racists?
She begins her article by recounting how dismayed she was that her daughter admired George Washington. Her daughter was signing the praises of the first President, which surprised Dr. Harvey.
I was dismayed, she writes, that the peace- and diversity-centered curriculum she gets at her public school had left her with such a one-dimensional view of history. Her 7-year-old daughter, she felt, needed to know the whole story.
Eventually, her daughter asked her about news. Professor Harvey, after discussing ethics violations with her 7-year-old, said, Well you know how youve been running around here celebrating George Washington? We always talk about George Washington fighting for freedom. But George Washington also owned black people as slaves.
Dr. Harveys small childs intrigue turned to horror.
Along with the conception of George Washington, Professor Harvey starts to wonder what affect society is having on children. And she pins the blame on parents of white children.
She explains, We know the youngest children internalize racist perceptions of themselves and others And lets be frank, its parents of white children, like myself, who tend to rely on these sincere, but ineffective, strategies.
Instead of teaching toddlers and small children to just be nice to everyone, we need to have them recognize racial meanness and understand that white kids have a particular responsibility to challenge racism.
One-dimensional, generic teachings are tempting, Dr. Harvey writes. They feel easier and safer. Thats the only reason my daughters school would settle for partial truths about George Washington.
But raising children who are resilient for justice and able to do their part to create an inclusive society takes more, especially now.
I’m sure she wants to send her daughter to be reeducated on other issues too, such as the joys of lesbianism.
Human sacrifice was always wrong...
I am not suggesting that it is the norm today.
However, if you were a Mayan or Aztec priest at the peak of those empires, human sacrifice was quite the norm. It was also common among some of the Norse cultures.
Anyone who studies history understands that culture and context are very important.
Were there people in the US who were abolitionists at the time of Washington? Sure there were. But slavery was a “norm” at the time. Thinking that the negroid race was “inferior” to the white man was common thinking at the time.
What Washington did in the context of forming this country stands out across the ages.
Our schools and places of higher education are ripping out the heart of our country’s foundation. And we all know what happens without a foundation.
Very few in the current era would understand, but many of them felt obligated to keep and maintain their slaves because they feared what would happen to them if cast out into the world to fend for themselves. Even though they opposed the institution of slavery, they’d inherited them for the most part and did what they thought was best for them under the circumstances.
This is nothing more than hatred for one’s country. The whole idea is that slavery was in the PAST. It’s over. Finished.
We were taught in school that Washington was the father of this country, etc. This was to give us a sense of pride in our country. Leftists do not have this sense of pride.
I wonder what her wife’s name is? Is her wife also a nutty professor?
Everything out of the Professor’s mouth spells “crackpot.” The Professor does not understand; she spouts obsessive nonsense. That does not equate to understanding.
I see she has a portrait of herself on the wall behind her in her fool’s cap.
Cosmic, absolute perfection is demanded of our Founding Fathers. They don’t hold any communist or socialist or Islamist figures to the same standards.
It predates Christianity. And was generally performed on non-peers.
Nothing else Washington ever did matters ... because racism.
Good grief.
I doubt she also told her daughter that black people sold black people into slavery and that many are still slaves throughout the world today at the hands of other blacks and Islamists.
That’s a man, Baby.
Che Guevara was a worse racist than most Klansmen and certainly far worse than any Founding Father, but you’ll never hear that from the dolts wearing Che t-shirts.
It would be funny if the kid rebels against her parent like kids do and grows up to be a conservative.
I could see the daughter and mother having this conservation sometime in the future.
Daughter: “No mom, George Washington was a great man. And so was Ronald Reagan! And, and, and I like........Donald Trump too! There I said it! I like President Trump and I don’t care what you or anyone else says!”
Mom: “No, no, no! This can’t be happening! Not my daughter!! WHERE DID I GO WRONG!”
Who took the nail gun to the good professer’s face?
Another old world way of thinking that few today can even grasp is that slavery was regarded as a better fate than being slaughtered. It was a spoil of war, the victors enslaving their former opponents.
Maddows disease.
When you can’t tell if it should have a set of tits on it.
I think we have a winner.
You can’t raise a good little commie if the kid admires someone like George Washington.
Looks like “it” did a face plant in someone’s tackle box.
