MT: Governor Bullock Vetoes Constitutional Carry, again
Gun Watch ^ | February 24, 2017 | Dean Weingarten

Governor Bullock (D) of Montana vetoed constitutional carry again. This year,2017, it was HB 262. Bullock vetoed the bill on Thursday afternoon, the 22nd of February. In an nbcmontana.com article, Governor Bullock stated that allowing individuals to decide whether they are eligible to carry concealed weapons is absurd:
Bullock noted in his veto letter that he had rejected two bills identical to Harris' measure in past sessions. The governor says the idea of allowing individuals to decide for themselves whether they are eligible to carry concealed weapons is absurd.
Governor Bullock did not mention that in Montana, individuals can already do so in 99% of the state.

It is unlikely that there will be a veto override attempt.  The bill passed with strong margins, about 60% of the votes, but it did not collect the two thirds necessary for an override.

This is the third time Governor Bullock vetoed Constitutional carry. You do not need a permit to carrry concealed in 99% of Montana, already.

It is a mostly symbolic measure.

For the legislature, it says "We respect the Second Amendment."

For the Governor, it says "I want Bloomberg money and DNC credibility."

Does the legislature have enough votes to overturn the veto?

Can someone from Montana or familiar with that state’s politics tell the uninformed among us how that state ended up with a (D) governor in the first place?

The governor says the idea of allowing individuals to decide for themselves whether they are eligible to carry concealed weapons is absurd.

He's one of these politicians who feels that only government can think for the citizens. Does he not realize that those who are not eligible to carry concealed weapons don't care what he thinks or decides.

“Does he not realize that those who are not eligible to carry concealed weapons don’t care what he thinks or decides.”

In his mind, someone prepared to commit murder won’t break a law to do so.

He’s SUPER smart, and we should listen to him.

“The governor says the idea of allowing individuals to decide for themselves whether they are eligible to carry concealed weapons is absurd.”

Letting the Second Amendment decide whether individuals are eligible to carry concealed weapons is the only lawful and sensible approach. That most fundamental of all God-given rights “shall not be infringed”. That is the strongest of all protective phrases in the Bill of Rights or anywhere else in the Constitution. It’s stronger even than “Congress shall make no law”. Restrictions on magazine capacity, on silencers, on barrel length, and on concealed carry are all both immoral and unconstitutional, and the governor should have signed this bill.

The MT citizens are too dangerous and unsafe to ccw, at least until they travel to 10-12 other states.

Because Greg Gianforte, the R candidate, is from out of state and it was easy to defeat him with ‘not a Montanan’ ads.

He started a tech company (I worked for it) in the 90’s, it eventually sold to Oracle and Greg had the multi millions to beat every other R candidate in the primary.

Our current gOvernor is worthless and corrupt.

At least we only have him for less than four years.

The legislature only meets every other year so we can expect this to be voted on again in 2019.

I’m from Montana and will give it a try. The state has a perverse tendency to hold both houses of the legislature with one party and the governorship with the other party. We were lucky during the Brian Schweitzer years that was so. And, although this issue is mystifying (Dems and tribes like guns and hunting, too), in the long run, the tendency (and a session only four months long) keeps the bozos in Helena from making too much mischief. About the worst that can be said these days is the governor and legislature are fighting over a budget surplus (they call it a reserve), trying to determine how big the surplus should be when all logic points to giving most of it back to the taxpayers. Because. It’s not the politicians’ money.

Be eager to hear what others say here.
