Ever wonder what happens when you shoot a .50 cal bullet with an arrow?

Cameron Hanes from Youtube places a perfect shot on a .50 cal bullet.

Most of us as kids had the thought: what would happen if I hammer the primer on a bullet with a nail? What if I shot a bullet with another bullet? I'm sure many of us have had these questions in mind.

Regardless, never before have I questioned what would happen if I shot a bullet with a bow and arrow.

Watching Cameron Hanes make that shot is a amazing! With that, we are all able to witness in slow motion exactly what happens when you hit a .50 cal with an arrow. See the action here.

Kool, however you might want to change the title.

The arrow is actually hitting the primer of a .50 Cal. Cartridge. The bullet is the projectile that comes out of the cartridge.

Didn’t Bill Clinton say that as well?

Arrow tip pierced the primer cap on the back side and the force blew backward which is what would be expected, frankly.

It’s why you always check your firing pin protrusion on Military rifles, particularly those that have been rebuilt or made from “parts”.

Yup. Probably 90% of firearms related articles are written by morons. If they’ve never reloaded a cartridge from scratch, they should write about something else, like boiling an egg.

When I was in Germany in the 80’s with the Army, we had a guy lose a finger to a .50 round. Idiot was on ammo guard and decided to hit the primer with the tip of another .50.

He placed the round, bullet down on the wood bench. When the round went off, it blew out the side of the neck and partially split the case. Also turned his little finger into a shredded mass and cut up his ring finger and palm. Docs tried to save his finger but it got infected as well. He was lucky not to lose more than a finger.

The idiot thought his leather gloves would protect him.

Haven’t wondered about this for a long time. Now no need to.

When I was in High School (Hampton, VA) we had shooting class each week. One of the students taped a shotgun shell to the back of a target. The .22LR round hit the shell and the shell went off. The idiot who put the shell on the back of the target got hit with a pellet and lost the sight in one eye.
I don’t even want to think about a .50 caliber round that can shoot out randomly.
Uber Stupid !!!

Look up prig and priggery in your dictionary. “Bullet” is common usage. I have spent more than a little bit of time around such things. I have never heard a soul in a store ask for a box of cartridges. Not even oddballs with the handlebar mustaches stuck in 1905 come in and say they need some cartridges.
In the Marines, you hear logistical talk of “beans, bullets, and bandaids”. They aren’t discussing projectiles.

To a hobbiest showing their expertise, its fun. But it matters not a whit to everyone else. And not a soul reading this story will think someone shot an arrow at a 750 gr jacketed bullet laying there alone....without the rest of the cartridge.

“Arrow tip pierced the primer cap on the back side and the force blew backward which is what would be expected, frankly.”

I don’t think we can tell it pierced it. That primer is the weak link for a round uncontained by a chamber. Throw one in a campfire and you’ll see the same effect. The Primer comes zinging out like a pellet gun shot. The case with usually explode like a piece of popcorn and the projectile stays put as the case pops off of it. But 50 cases are extremely thick and usually don’t deform the way a smaller round will.

I looked at the video closely and since it was in slow motion it is fairly easy to see a backward blast with no visible shooting star primer blown to the rear. To me that indicates a pierced primer.

Purchasers usually ask for “ammo”.

Yep, and I did both as a kid as soon as I wondered. I did the nail through primer in a vice at least, but did get some very nasty burns.

Walk into any gun store and ask for .50 cal. Bullets that’s what your going to get. A box of bullets. Bullets don’t explode when you hit them. Primers do, especially when they are pressed into a Cartridge.

Read the side or end of any box of ammo and it clearly says 20 Center fire or rimfire Cartridges.

Details are important. Kind of like idiots referring to the AR in the AR15 to mean assault rifle.
