The New Americana vs. James Madison
Article V Blog ^ | November 2nd 2016 | Rodney Dodsworth

Raise your hand if you knew that James Madison opposed the second method in Article V to amend the Constitution. The New Americana (TNA) recently published a misleading and insult-laden column regarding the Article V state convention amendment process and Convention of States (COS) supporters. It illustrates how the most effective deceptions are built around an element of truth.

The TNA shamelessly attempts to deceive the reader into believing the very opposite of the truth, that the man who shepherded the Virginia Plan to fruition as a new Constitution of government opposed taking appropriate measures to keep it.

As a half-truthful proof, TNA relies on an unsourced comment from James Madison:

If a General Convention were to take place for the avowed and sole purpose of revising the Constitution, it would naturally consider itself as having a greater latitude than the congress . . . It would consequently give greater agitation to the public mind; an election into it would be courted by the most violent partisans on both sides . . . who might have the dangerous opportunity of sapping the very foundations of the fabric . . . Having witnessed the difficulties and dangers experienced by the first convention, which assembled under every propitious circumstance, I should tremble for the result of a second, meeting in the present temper in America. (my emphasis)

The author next asserts, “With all due respect to Mr. (Mark) Levin, Judge Napolitano and other zealots, it is reasonable to assume that he (Madison) is the one with the expertise, not they.” In what follows, I show how Madison, Levin, Napolitano, and COS supporters are all on the same team in support of the Article V State convention process to propose amendments.

Madison was quiet right to opposed another convention at that time given the unstable conditions in the nation. The agitation consequent to another convention could have easily destroyed the new government and nation.

What he would think of this process today is not clear. He was completely wrong about the emergence and power of political parties which he called “factions” and there is little doubt that a new convention will be determined by the relative strengths and manipulations of our parties. That is dangerous considering one is neo-Fascist and the other is cowardly and fearing the media.

The former is a lineal descendant of the party (the Democrat-Republican) he and Jefferson formed to destroy Alexander Hamilton who did as much as anyone to get this nation established on a firm footing.

Hang in there. Election close at hand.

It’s impossible to compete right now, but I will DROP scandal research after this election and focus more on constitutional amendments. I believe others will too.

Not only is there a wikileaks frenzy right now [shot up tremendously] but also a major document dump by Anonymous. And Hillary’s in meltdown.

So no worries.

Chin up!

I belive Madison was clear mined enough to know better than to say anything as absurd as the convention would have the “purpose of revising the Constitution” when an Article V convention would have no such power.

From my Maier reference, a colleague of Madison wrote that the VA ratification convention so rattled Madison that he was haunted by the “ghost of Patrick Henry” long thereafter.

My political daydream is that President Trump will soon realize that Washington cannot be fixed from within, and an Article V convention is essential.

Trump’s already pushing for term limited congress.
