At least 11 people were injured one critically, nearly losing an arm when a ferry heading to New Jersey hit people kayaking, according to police.
Five people were taken to hospitals near Jersey City, most with minor shoulder and back injuries after the Hudson River accident. The NYPD Harbor Unit says the instructor suffered a partially severed arm, according to WABC-TV.
The incident happened just before 6 p.m. Tuesday near Pier 79 on Manhattan's west side as a group of 10 kayakers were paddling down the river, according to News12.
The group was riding in eight kayaks, and at least two kayaks were hit by the NY Waterway ferry, according to the report.
The ferry was leaving the New York City terminal and heading to Jersey City, and authorities and eyewitnesses told the station that the sun was low, making visibility difficult.
A kayaker told Eyewitness News that coming face to face with a ferry is still a blur, and that both he and his sister were pulled from the Hudson River after a NY Waterways Water Taxi hit the kayakers in their group....

By all the laws of the waters I know, the kayakers were in the wrong.
The smaller boat/vessel ALWAYS gives way to the larger one. Even if the captain saw them, what was he supposed to do with a vessel massing thousands of tons? Spin the wheel?
Bicycles try to occupy same space as cars and trucks and kayakers as ferry’s and ships. What could possibly go wrong?
Violating Newton’s Laws can be painful.
Ferry has a schedule, and a route.
Instructor should know ALL about this, dummy.

Even smarter, the kayaker IS the size of a bike. The ferry is the size of, what, 20 pr 30 big rigs?

Won the stupid prize for doing a stupid thing.
Well scratch that one off your bucket list .... got hit by a ferry (note spelling) in a kayak and survived!
Don’t bring a kayak to a ferry fight!
(that sounds weird doesn’t it?)
I don’t always kayak, but . . .
Well, there’s a couple of factors going on here, and only an investigation can decide this.
1. The ferry was under power, the kayaks were not: ferry loses.
2. Did the ferry sound the requisite audible signal before attempting to leave the slip?: another potential ferry loss
3. Did the captain/crew make every attempt to visually ascertain whether it was safe to move the vessel? another ferry loss
4. Were the kayaker’s too close to active slips to proceed safely? mitigating circumstance
My guess is the ferry loses and the Captain is toast - shame (I hope I don’t know this captain)
Fairies in kayaks should yield to Ferry’s. HTH
These Kayakers are the same as Bike Riders who demand the right of way. I wonder if these kayakers are the type that race freight trains to a crossing?
I have seen it many times.
Cyclists will argue that drivers are "irresponsible", or don't yield to them, or are the cause of the accidents.....or whatever.
The laws of physics still apply. Two classes of moving objects, attempting to use the same road, with massive differential speeds and weight/mass disparities are a recipe for disaster.
The Sunday Spandex crowd bikes all along roads near me on the weekends. You cannot see them until you round corners, and then you either slam on your brakes and have the car behind you rear end you, hit the cyclists, or swerve onto oncoming traffic. Not many good options there.
Bikes were not meant for busy roads with cars and trucks traveling at higher speeds than they. The cars can adhere to every road and speed rule, and still the cyclists put everyone in jeopardy.
In the same way, kayaks do not belong in waterways were large commercial ferry's are operating.
But people feel "entitled" to do what they think they have a right to do.
And everyone else be damned.
~~~~~~~~~~
Ten (10) people kayakingin Eight (8) kayaks (Two kayaks were double-occupancy?)
"At least" two (2) kayaks were hit by the ferry
Eleven (11) people were hurt.
Sounds like Democrat vote-counting on election night...
ferries travel in commercial shipping lanes, they have the right of way no matter what in that lane. liberal pussy yakers must stay the heck out of there. idiots. I see it all the time up here in Maine, they think they have the right of way, zero voters for sure.
Ok,
Is this the same polluted Hudson River that Westinghouse dumped pcb’s in to?
Along with bodies with cement shoes?
Oh no, Westinghouse didn’t leave the bodies there.
The Corleone’s did that.
We have a lot of bicyclists on the backroads around here and most of them are responsible but sometimes you come across a group that, instead of responsibly riding single file, is sprawled out all over the road, hogging the road.
I always try to avoid them but it seems like without fail, I encounter them just as we are cresting a hill and you CANNOT see if someone is coming on the other side.
