Weekly Prepper Thread

Hello Everyone, it is time to once again to open our mind/s to the realms of saving our & families arse/s when things go from bad to worse. I would have posted up last week, but I & my family were under the weather, so I had to play nurse to the 3 of us.

So now let us discuss property management. For me, we have 5 acres here in eastern central Mo. by the mighty Mississippi River [way above the flood plains too]. But about 1/3 of my property is over grown with trees & invasive plants. And in this area I have about 6 inches deep of leaf litter & I want to clear it out. So I thought about it & thought up of a controlled burn, to clear all the dead limbs, trees, excessive leaves, ect out. But it is way too much for me to deal with, so what to do. I called my local volunteer fire dept. They need the forest fire/wild land fire training experience & I need this area cleared out. So this is a win-win for everyone. The ashes will get returned back into the ground & clears out the invasive plants, keeps the area from having an out of control wild fire, keeps the buildings in the area safe from an out of control wild fire & they get to have training on what to do & NOT to do in these types of fire. So maybe this is something you can do with your local fire dept's & all it took is a phone call to them to set it up. We have to be good stewards of our land/s & this is just one step in doing it. the next thing I have to do is drain & dredge my pond & remove the 50+ years of silt build up. The removed silt will go to building up my raised bed gardens. Now I know that someone out there will raise the specter of the epa & their nazi control of all the waters. Well there was a Federal law suite by 11 states against the federal gov.'t & the epa lost. The court ruled that the epa had over reached their authority by ruling that they controlled all the water in the US. [This is a very big win for us "little" guys so we can work on our properties without big brother sticking their nose onto our property. When it comes time to refill my pond I'll let "Mother Nature" do it for me. As my property naturally slopes down to the pond. Then next year I can restock it with plants & critters natural to this area.

The next item for debate is how do you store your excess dry goods. I for one save all my glass jars, then wash & sterilize them. Then when needed I will store my excess dry goods in them. [like sugar, egg noodles, flour, ect...] I find this keeps little critters out of them. So in some ways preppers/homesteaders have a lot in common with hoarders, in that we save just about everything. [We might have need of that item in the future...]

KuneKune pigs are my current choice for cleaning out orchards and/or woodland.

They don't root so they do not damage trees and they are four legged vacuum cleaners.

And when fall comes they are Delicious. :)

Have you read "Woodland Homestead"? It is a very good book.

We’re growing a big garden this year... not because we need the food, but because my kids are getting old enough to help with it and I want them to to have the experience. Knowing how to grow food is a very useful thing.

No, I have not read that book. I am also trying to stay away from pigs, for me they would be too much trouble. But thank you for your idea/s. I will try to find that book though.

My plans call for 5-6 egg laying chickens, 5-6 milking goats [We do not the space for cows here] plus a fairly decent sized garden/s with fruit trees.

In fact my first apple tree has blossoms on it already & I just planted it last year. So I do not expect many apples from it for a bit. But it is a start.

My “dry goods” are in #10 cans from the LDS food storage center. I’m not Mormon, but I approve of their methods and of their products. Once emptied, I plan to reuse them for storage, of course. I empty a few each year, since I like to do a little cooking with emergency food.

As for using the local fire depart for controlled burns, I like that idea. I don’t need a controlled burn, but it’s a smart way to get it done without a lot of work or risk on your own.

My cousin wanted to tear down an hold cottage and replace it with a four season house.

He did the same thing: He called the local fire guys. They had a ball watching it burn to the ground. I thought it was a little weird. But it makes more sense to me twenty years later.

We're starting our first experiment with 'pasture pigs' this month.

Most food like wheat, sugar, salt is in 5 or 6 gallon buckets. If we access them frequently, then they get screw-on lids called Gamma Seals.

A smart man knows his limitations, & I know what size of a controlled burn I can handle. And this is way to big for me to handle.

and I have the LDS prepper handbook in my library too.

It depends on the pig. To me they are a lot less trouble and less destructive then goats but then I would not recommend trying to milk a pig!

The book taught me a great deal about how to get the most out of my woodlot. I had thought of it as a source of firewood (chopping trees down), fruit and maybe a sugar bush. Now I plan to cultivate mushrooms and coppice firewood for sure.

A lot of Mormonism I do not get but the saving and stockpiling are good ideas.

“Well there was a Federal law suite by 11 states against the federal gov.’t & the epa lost. The court ruled that the epa had over reached their authority by ruling that they controlled all the water in the US.”

It’s much worse than most know. The EPA lost in Rapanos v US. The EPA was involved in extortion and outright sedition. Our traitors in Congress refused to hold hearings and indict these eco-fascists. People need to elect state representatives and county sheriffs to arrest federal fascists, try them in state courts and imprison them for life.
