My thoughts? Campaigns have to mature and shift gears when nearing the convention. Trump has the momentum but he has to lock down the delegate count by the convention.
Manafort is THE best guy to do that.

"Can't wait to see how Trump supporters explain this away."? It isn't obvious? The core of US values is a sense of fair play. When someone doesn't play fair, you do whatever it takes to win. Manafort sounds terrific and like he understands how deeply offensive Cruz's campaign techniques are.

Cruz hired a Bush. A lot of those who have endorsed him are GOPe - Lindsey Grahm, Nicky Haley, Scott Walker, and others. The only one I felt is not straight GOPe is Mike Lee.
Trump gets to a critical point in this campaign season, and hires the best man for the job he needs done. And a man, allow me to point out, who also served Reagan. I don’t think it odd that he hired the man, I would think it odd if he did not select the person with the best background and the best record of results.
The man will be working FOR Trump, not the other way round. That is a thing you seem to be missing.
He claims to have “advised” Reagan as a very young man. Before that he helped Ford, Reagan’s arch enemy. Since then it has been Dole and the Bushes. Yup, total GOPe insider lobbyist. A good fit for Trump.

I'll add to my answer. Don't you listen to Trump at rallies? He's explained to us MANY TIMES that when he negotiates a deal, he'll get the very best people to get the job done. They won't always be the nicest people, some might even be mean, but they'll negotiate a great deal. At this phase, Manafort has the focus and the skills and is in it to get the job done.

Cruzers on this forum ridicule Trump for complaining about delegate poaching. Why complain when he hires someone to help shepherd delegates? Jealousy?

Trump may take the nomination if this new chap is really good, but Trump will not have enough support to make it to the magic 66 million votes unless he has Cruz along for the ride.
Both candidates need to suck it up and make peace. together they will be a formidable ticket.
I am embarrassed for many of my Trump supporting friends. This thread shows exactly how much kool-aide many Trump supporters have drunk. Cruz does it..”bad, evil, GOPe insider”. Trump does it...”BRILLIANT! Cruz is still bad for doing it”. Somewhere, someplace in a very old book, there is a passage about this very thing.
