Geronimo died on this day in 1909 - here's why we yell his name when we jump out of planes

February 17th is the anniversary of the death in 1909 of that legendary Chiricahua Apache chieftain, Geronimo (born ca. 1829), whose actual Indian name was Goyathlay ("One Who Yawns"). The name by which Geronimo is remembered was supposedly bestowed on him by a detachment of Mexican soldiers so stunned by the ferocity of his resistance that they repeatedly invoked the name of St. Jerome against him.

The reason that U.S. airborne troops yell "Geronimo!" when they jump out of airplanes has to do with a 1939 movie by that name which was viewed by a group of early paratroopers (the Parachute Test Platoon in Fort Benning, Georgia) in 1940. The concept of jumping from planes with parachutes was nerve-racking, and in order to demonstrate his bravery one of them planned to yell Geronimo's name. The next year, the first official parachute unit, the 501st Parachute Infantry Battalion, made "Geronimo" the motto on their unit insignia.

Geronimos family was killed by Mexicans, not the USA. HIs mother, wife and kids were killed. He had an absolute vicious hatred for Mexicans. Mexicans killed a lot of Indians, if you look at old maps of the USA almost the entire half of the west was taken over by Mexico, and the Mexican government use to pay a $25 bounty for an Apache scalp, but of course you’ll never hear about that because only the evil white man from the USA killed the Indians.

Well, technically, yes. The upper caste in Mexico is largely Spanish, descended from the Conquistadors, so the officers, at least, would have been “white” as generally defined today.

If you’ve ever traveled to Sonora or Chihuahua Mexico, you’ll know that most Northern Mexicans are plainly White-European. There were large numbers of immigrants from Italy, France, Germany, Spain and even the UK moving there in the late 1800’s up to about WWII.

There was also slaveholding in Indian Territory, which is why some of the Indians there sided with the Confederacy (and were later punished by the federal government by losing some of their land).

Pio Pico, the last Mexican governor of California, was part-African in ancestry (not a secret at the time, and provable from church records).

Dee Brown mostly talks about how bad the whites were to the Indians, but when he deals with some of the Arizona tribes mentions how much they hated the Mexicans.

William Ellison, South Carolina, grandson fought for Confederacy. Ellison supported south throughout war. Owned over 40 slaves. He was in no way alone. Also many free blacks bought Confederate war bonds etc. Blacks served in Confederate units. Certain slaves were given guns to hunt for meat to bring back to plantations. Slavery was a complicated institution and there were many levels that most non southerners are unaware. The irony was as abolitionists increased their outcry and pressure it led the south to become more and more repressive. See Eugene Genovese etc. Genovese was totally in the Marxists sphere until later in life. He changed his views on slavery as he got older. Funny how age affects how we view the world.
