Dear FR Admin:
It's been a few weeks now, but I'm sure those pesky characters are becoming annoying. I did see one thread where I moderator say it was being worked on, but I have yet to see a fix. Perhaps fellow freepers can help "crowd fix" / offer possible solutions.
If I copy and past directly from a correctly displaying FR post with “ & ‘, it will convert them to incorrectly displaying characters.
You can also copy the text from the source, paste it into Notepad or TextEdit ( straight txt editor), copy again and paste into FR editor. That will strip out all special characters. Pain in the butt, but will work until they figure it out.
I’m not a Web/Dev expert but I stayed at a Holiday Inn last night.
My advice: Restart, restart, restart! (Until the problem is solved or until one is convinced the machine *must* be possessed in some fashion. Whichever comes later. )
Now, just pretend that you’ve been on hold for a few hours and send me $39.95 for this tech call, and we will call this problem “solved”. :)
Seems to me like there are at least 3 different types of quotes we see here (when this converting problem isn’t happening). The slanted (or double accent quotes, if that is what they are called), the straight ones (”), and the curly ones. (I can only produce the straight ones seen above)
Makes sense what you say, though, that it well may be related to certain fonts other websites use, not being properly converted when copied and pasted here.
oh, so you don’t like funny characters huh? That’s racist!
I should think a reformat is in order
Agree, but as someone else pointed out, if you copy text from a FR post and paste it into the editor, you still get the crazy characters and this site is straight up Times New Roman, not Google font API. Should probably reboot the server, as someone suggested, and see if that resolves it.
That curly apostrophe in the word “don’t” in your post 25, when copied and pasted, previewed or posted, gets converted to that strange set of characters.
ie,
oh, so you donât like funny characters huh?
The funny characters get funny with each copy-paste.
oh, so you donââ¬â¢t like funny characters huh?
Make that funnier with each copy-paste.
ooh, so you donâââ‰â¢t like funny characters huh?
Lol! I just noticed that the straight quotes that I typed in composition for my post 24 were converted to the curly ones.
...also in my post 29.
That does not correct the problem.
I copied my post #21 into a text editor. It results in the line below:
If I copy and past directly from a correctly displaying FR post with â & â, it will convert them to incorrectly displaying characters.
Justdontuseanypunctuationmarks
Except that this is a colossal pain in the keister, especially for any long posts.
FR s/w is very propritary. No computer tech input from the masses desired, just $ contributions.
Rewrite the system in C#.NET, from orbit.
It’s the only way to be sure.
It’s not just copy and paste.
If I type 4 periodsâ¦.
then hit preview/post I get the characters
If I type 4 periods...
then hit preview, delete the periods and retype, hit preview again, they show correctly.
