RALEIGH, NORTH CAROLINA Scientists using underwater vehicles and sonar have found a shipwreck off the North Carolina coast that may date back to the American Revolution, Duke University said Friday.
The expedition led by Duke marine scientist Cindy Van Dover found the previously unknown wreck in mile-deep waters on July 12 using an underwater robot and a manned submarine.
They've found artifacts including an iron chain, glass bottles, an unglazed pottery jug and navigational instruments including a metal compass. Archaeologists who examined photos of the artifacts say the wreck appears to date back as far as the late 18th century, which would make it a rare find.
"This is an exciting find, and a vivid reminder that even with major advances in our ability to access and explore the ocean, the deep sea holds its secrets close,'' Van Dover, director of the Duke University Marine Laboratory, said in a news release.
The scientists, whose primary mission is studying deep-sea ecosystems, were returning to an area called the Blake Plateau that they had previously explored with sonar.
The expedition also includes scientists from North Carolina State University and the University of Oregon aboard a vessel from the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution. The wreck was found using Woods Hole's unmanned vehicle Sentry and the manned submarine Alvin.

Good stuff!
It’ll be interesting when the era and name of this shipwreck is identified. (bookmarked)

Now we know where our FRiend Travis went to.
;-)
Interesting, thanks!
The Adrea Doria tech guys do not care much for mortal limits, but even this is beyond them. Good thing, I have heard they do not much respect that wreck either, but it has been a while since I paid attention.
Thanks Lurkina.n.Learnin.
Thanks! That’s really cool!
The Blake Plateau, my old workplace while swordfishing and wreckfish fishing. It can be a very tough place to work. This time of year it’s like a millpond unless the tropics get it stirred up.
Lots of wrecks off the North Carolina coast. Definitely prone to storms.
:’) Shiver me timbers.
