Am I the only one who allows himself to think, if only for a moment, that this is kind of impressive? I know, I know . . reality has to hit you and do so quickly. These are very dangerous men who have killed before and almost surely would have no compunction about doing so again if they think it’s necessary to help them evade capture.
So it’s not with approval, but a sort of horrified respect, that I observe escape from maximum security prison using power tools is quite the dubious achievement. Quite dubious. And quite the achievement:

Power tools make a very loud noise, tremendous vibrations, cutting through steel and concrete. How on earth could they evade detection? You talk about an inside job...
I read this morning that they believe that the escapees were helped by a female employee who had a crush on one of them (Matt, who the cops described as a “ladies man”) and that the power tools were obtained from contractor worksites that were inside the walls because of a major construction job that was being carried out at the prison.
It obviously took a lot of advance planning and outside assistance, probably even more than that one female employee could have provided, so I guess we’re just at the start of this story.
Both of these men are cold blooded killers. One emptied a gun into a deputy killing him with his own gun, just a few miles down the road from me. The second man killed three people, dismembering one. I pray they are apprehended without any lives lost. Suicide by cop works, though.
And an affirmative action, politically correct female guard.
I read the ‘Rat lib governor Cuomo visited the prison yesterday and then set up a $100k reward for these two. You know if libs were so concerned about people escaping justice, why don’t they start with the Clintons?
They keep mentioning “drills” in all these stories. Looking at those openings cut behind the bunks, and the one in the large pipe, those weren’t made with any drill, even a drill with a cutting bit. More likely they used a small cordless circular saw with a diamond blade. I’m anxious to find out how they were able to overcome the noise problem from whatever they were using.
I don’t think a cordless saw is going to cut through 1/2” iron pipe.
I’ve got one and while it’s great on wood, it doesn’t have the power for steel.
I’m almost wondering if it was a reverse escape. Like someone spent days underground breaking in to help them get out
Where they got the power tools is not going to be a shock, but you've hit on the real question. My guess: they coordinated their drilling/cutting with real construction work. A jackhammer used by a legitimate worker would cover even the noise of cutting through steel over a significant radius.
Oh they'll cut steel. I use one on re-bar all the time, admittedly the pipe is going to take a lot longer but a good high torque saw, a good blade and patience would get them through. Probably a few extra battery packs would be necessary too.

They came up out of a manhole. I wonder if this was done in the night or the day? Someone must’ve seen them.
How on earth did they know to follow that route and that it would lead to an opening of any kind at all?
Did they hide the hole behind a poster of Rita Hayworth?
If there’s any truth to this at all, the only “power tool” that makes sense in this circumstance is an oxyacetylene torch.
I would suggest that information is available through the inmate 'inside maintenance working gang', or an outside utility provider.
Governor Cumo said that Dannemorah was built using the same blueprint/architecture as the maximum security Attica Correctional facility .
Until they determine the exact type of outside support and route taken, the other maximum security facilities in NY are at risk.
I was at San Quentin for 2 years, and 23 years at Solano in Vacaville. Construction crews are escorted constantly by custody staff. ALL tools are formally inventoried at the beginning and ending of each shift, and randomly inventoried at different times during the shift. I wonder where they could have gotten power tools, but if these things turn up missing, the tools are not missing for very long, before it is discovered, and they will lock down the joint until the tools are found. Every search I was ever involved in, turned out to be a staff member’s mistake. We really hated life when syringes turned up missing. That was not fun.
Good point. Yes. Must be an inside job, why would two guys in a cell know of this at all.
Come to think of it were these two guys in the same cell?
In all the commentary and publicity , I don't think the issue of them possibly being cell-mates has been addressed.
However , it seems quite likely that they were cell-mates since it would require only one exit hole, and access to utility runs between the walls.
