When I grew up in the fifties and sixties, I didn't know one father who didn't have a job or didn't take care of his family. I didn't know anybody on welfare or assistance. It was assumed if you were man, you took care of your family.

Sure, there were alcoholic parents and some fathers died and left a family without a breadwinner. But nobody, Dem or Republican, thought about turning to the government for help. Times change.
