In April 1999, we were all stunned by the news that Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold had attacked and killed students at Columbine High School in Littleton, Colorado and, more recently, in December 2012, that Adam Lanza, after killing his mother at home, then massacred twenty-six staff and students at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut. These events evoke dread of potential events, a quest to understand why they occurred, and ways to avoid further comparable killings.
Peter Langman has authored “School Shooters: Understanding High School, College, and Adult Perpetrators.” It offers very little comfort, but only because this psychologist, widely recognized for his expertise, is refreshingly honest.

Well duh. Of course “school shooters” can be spotted. According to nannie bloomers and the momunists and the margabby kelly-giffords crowd, anybody that possesses a firearm is a potential “school shooter”. Ergo; only police and military should be in possession of firearms. Pesky citizens need not apply.

They are noticed but with the laws and red tape now days it's difficult to impossible to respond.
What I took away from it was that the girl targeted was normal and most of the other kids in the school were nasty little liberal wimps.

Re: Columbine. First off, how does a kid amass a basement full of weapons and other “clues” totally overlooked by parents who were no doubt warned by their son never to enter his lair. Preventable? I’d say chances were certainly better if major steps had been taken early on. If one of our kids had warned me to never open their door, no matter what, no problem. It would have been easily been taken off the hinges. There are of course some sociopaths who are really, really good at hiding it, Ted Bundy comes to mind. But when major clues are everywhere, the adults had better not be asleep at the switch.
