Thank You Archbishop Cordileone For Your Courageous Leadership

Your Excellency,

We’ve been monitoring the recent controversy surrounding your decision to insert morality clauses into teacher contracts in schools in your Archdiocese.

Given the hostility to the teachings of the Church and growing attempts to coerce our institutions, your decision is perfectly reasonable. As you know, such clauses are nothing new and represent a commitment to fulfill a basic promise to those families who entrust their children to the care of the Church.

We want you to know that we are praying for you and support you 100%.

As the Archbishop of San Francisco, you are responsible for insuring that all schools including the children in their care are taught the faith. To avoid any confusion, it’s indeed crucial that all those involved in the care of these children act in harmony with the teachings of the Church.

Our country’s tradition of religious liberty has enabled generations of Americans to benefit from the rich tradition of Catholic education. Catholics are rightly proud of the academic, spiritual, and moral education offered in our schools. This is why so many parents sacrifice to send their children to Catholic schools.

Parents entrust their children to Catholic schools for a reason. Pope Francis recently said: “We need to provide an education which teaches critical thinking and encourages the development of mature moral values.” Likewise, in your letter to San Francisco’s Catholic high school teachers, you explained that Catholic schools assist “Catholic parents in their primary duty of educating their children in virtue, holiness, and their ability to evangelize others in society.”

Thank you for showing us what true leadership looks like and for defending Catholic families, students, and an important principle of religious liberty in America. We know you will stand firm despite the recent attacks against you. You have been an exemplar of courage in charity, and we are grateful.

Please know you are not alone. Rest assured that Catholics across America are praying with you and for you.

Through the intercession of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton, we pray that you will be blessed with all the graces you need during this time.

The good Archbishop knows all too well that spiritual decisions that are made in his archdiocese are his responsibility before God. In the face of evil we need to hold him up in prayer.

Definitely. The big question in my mind is whether the Pope will remove him or appoint a coadjutor. This is the most gay-friendly Vatican ever, and I wouldn’t be surprised at anything. So I think signing petitions like this at least indicates that many of us are not on board with that.
