He's 75 years old for cryin out loud. The elderly have thin skin and bruise quite easily and often gruesomely especially if they're on medications such as blood thinners. No conspiracy theories necessary.
If he lost his grip on the band when he stretched it then its handle could strike him quite hard and knock him over onto something like a table. My dad was his age when he stumbled while standing on a stepladder and he broke his ribs.
