Have you noticed men wearing extremely long Civil War style beards lately? The so-called lumbersexual is essentially engaging in a pop-culture extreme overreaction to the metrosexual. Youll recall the metrosexuals are generally straight men who spend an excessive amount of time on grooming and their clothes. In some ways the metrosexual mirrors certain aspects of the homosexual culture in this regard. The lumbersexual, in extreme overreaction to the metrosexual, has decided that the beard is the height of masculinity and demonstrate that masculinity in extreme manner. Both the metrosexual and the lumbersexual are just following the crowd, very few of them actually think for themselves. In the case of the lumbersexual, hes adopted an absurd definition of masculinity.
We live in a society wherein everyone insists theyre unique and special, with many believing their clothing and appearance demonstrate their unique specialness. Of course the people insisting theyre unique the loudest are usually the ones who look exactly like everyone else in their little sub group. The goths are a good example, they insist on their uniqueness and yet every last one of them looks identical. Theyre arent unique, theyre just following the crowd without admitting it. The same has always been true of the metrosexual, who pretends that his interest in grooming sets him apart from all the other men who in his mind are slobs. In reality, all the metrosexuals look identical. They wear the same style of clothing and groom themselves in relatively the same manner. Theres nothing unique about them as individuals, theyre following the trends of a particular group.
The so-called lumbersexuals are no different. Tired of men spending more time in the bathroom grooming themselves than women, these men have decided to grow long beards and care little of their appearance. Yet in doing so they arent demonstrating anything unique about themselves. All theyre doing is showing the world that they to can follow cultural trends. These days its popular for men to demonstrate their masculinity via a beard, so the lumbersexuals all have obnoxiously long beards. Congratulations guys, you to can follow cultural trends while pretending to be unique. Worse, you imagine youre making some sort of statement against men behaving in a vaguely feminine way. In doing so, the lumbersexuals have accepted the progressive notion that every single daily event is a political statement. We need not make political statements to the world via our grooming and clothing. Yet the lumbersexuals as a group are doing just that.
You dont prove your masculinity via your beard. It makes no sense for men to settle for such a superficial and cheap definition of masculinity. Yet the lumbersexuals, in their extreme overreaction to the metrosexuals, are cheapening masculinity to the point where a beard defines it. A man, it appears, is nothing more than a beard. Why are these men, who apparently are interested in demonstrating masculinity, allowing such to be defined in such an irrelevant manner? Masculinity isnt demonstrated by a beard, its demonstrated in how a man treats a woman, how he loves his children and most importantly in how he loves Jesus Christ. A beard is frankly irrelevant to masculinity. You can love your children and God with or without a beard, it really matters not. You can treat women in a chivalrous manner with or without a beard. Why are we allowing progressives to cheapen masculinity to our beards?
Of course no one sporting a long beard and calling themselves masculine has spent a moment thinking about how theyve cheapened masculinity. Theyre just following the crowd, the same as the metrosexuals, the goths, the hipsters and so on. No one bothers to think about anything theyre doing these days, they just react with emotion and follow everyone else. Thats ultimately the problem here, no one thinks for themselves anymore. That doesnt stop people from imaging theyre special snowflakes or unique individuals while they follow the crowd. It says a lot about education in this country, the government schools in particular arent teaching kids to think. As a result we have a legion of men growing obnoxiously long beards while believing theyre making a statement against overly groomed men. Worse, they believe their beard is a sign of their masculinity. No wonder our nation is in such bad shape.
There.
Years before my birth, my dad was in a car accident. He hit his face on the dash or windshield and destroyed his chin. It was only years later, when he got a wild hair and shaved off his beard, did we all notice his smashed up face.
Everyone was extremely taken aback, to put it mildly. Some ladies even gasped when they saw him beardless for the first time ever.
He responded to popular opinioon and grew it back; I consider it a medical waiver.
"So called" by whom, exactly? Who invents these idiotic terms?
I had one when I met my wife. She doesn’t like it when I shave. I did go clean shaven once when my oldest boy was about 2, and it scared him!
I hate shaving, but my beard looks like a bunch of rabid Brillo pads are gnawing at my face. I shave so I won’t hear little girls scream, “Mommy! The Brillo Pads have gone feral!”
:>(
“Then there are those who deliberately have five oclock shadow all day”
Like the guys on the TV show “Lost”. They always had 4 days of stubble. Same thing in the first few seasons of the “Walking Dead”. They finally got it right this season with Ricks scraggly beard.
I’d say, if it makes liberals mad or uncomfortable,
that right there tells you it’s the right thing to do.

This is the essence of it isn't it? I would be more confortable having a drink with a "lunbersexual" type compared to a man who shaves his chest and legs. : - )
The poster boy for this currently is Willie Geist on PMSNBC Morning Joe...talk about a “fail”.
“Masculinity isnt demonstrated by a beard, its demonstrated in how a man treats a woman, how he loves his children and most importantly in how he loves Jesus Christ. A beard is frankly irrelevant to masculinity.”
The author just doesn’t get it: Culturally we gave up control of the definition of masculinity to Political Correctness. The old definition excluded women, y’see. So a beard IS definitive of masculinity....NOW!
declaring there can be only one reason to grow a beard - insecurity about masculinity - some men look better with a beard - faces with a weak chin or jawline - some people have long faces and choose a hair style that is flattering for their face
following any trend is condemned? eyeroll
but really - this?
“No wonder our nation is in such bad shape.”
you can find a link between the downfall of the nation and a beard?
Shaving says a lot about a man, like “I am not one.”
It's not rebellion if everyone is doing it; IT'S CONFORMITY !
A good example is the way Cosmo forces young women to dress the exact same way.
The whole "lumbersexual" concept was generated by some simpering pissant who desperately tries to justify themselves by finding some reason to tie someone's appearance to their sexuality while having their own secret relationship with their No-No...
So spare me the dime-store shrinkdom.
I'm not getting my back/chest/arms/any other parts waxed, either.
As for a beard, mine was far longer long before this trend (think 25 years ago), back when I had to braid it to keep it from obstructing my vision while riding my motorcycle.
I wore it then because it pleased me to do so. If I wear one now, (aside from keeping frostbite away) it is for the same reason.
What the author doesn't understand, is that I couldn't care less what stupid conclusions they draw from relatively superficial things, except to note that they are remarkably shallow in their view of people.
I have had a beard since 1979. I have smoked a pipe nearly as long. I have always worn flannel shirts. I play the banjo.
A friend in New York City calls me a proto-hipster because a lot of the hipsters out there have adopted my “style” and habits. I don’t know that like being mistaken for an old hipster, but I figure in a couple of years the hipsters will all be doing something else.
Exactly. All great points. It sounds like this was penned by someone who is very insecure about their own masculinity.
Actually, the fashionista herd, from boutique to Wal-mart, 'designs' clothes which are marketed at almost all levels which essentially back young women into a corner: they wear what is available.
Essentially, the decisions are made long before a young lady approaches the clothing section because so little else is available.
I have a goatee and a mustache. I have them because I like them. I shaved off my goatee about 6 months ago for a job interview, but grew it back after I was told that there was no problem having one at work (food service).
Just wish there wasn’t so much grey in it.
Whining about other people’s inconsequential fashions doesn’t make you a shallow idiot.
It might be a good indicator though.
