A Washington Examiner article asks “Can the IRS be fixed, or should it just be abolished?” The answer is clear to anybody who has followed the IRS scandal or filed a federal tax return.
Washington’s individual income tax and its enforcement agency, the IRS, cannot be fixed, repaired, reformed or rehabilitated. They are a cancer eating away at this nation, her taxpayers and our economic engine.
Congress created the income tax in 1913, and for 100 years the IRS has operated exactly as intended, as an agent of control with total impunity, even down to the political targeting of individuals and groups.
After all, Congress and Washington’s finest lobbyists — many of whom previously served as members of Congress or congressional support staff — made it possible for IRS bureaucrats to write all 73,954 pages of the tax code.
In combination with IRS enforcement, the income tax is the perfect mechanism for Congress to exact control, fund hidden political agendas, stuff campaign coffers and gain entree into an elite millionaires club.
Wall Street Journal columnist and former Reagan presidential speechwriter Peggy Noonan wrote in January:
“Someday history will write of our era, and the biggest scandal will be the thing we accepted in our leaders; chronic and endemic selfishness. History will be hard on us for that.”
That said, the American people clearly are fed up. They are tired, demoralized and collapsing from a tax code and enforcement agency that does Congress’ bidding while plundering earnings and destroying individual lives and businesses.
Neither the income tax nor its oppressive bureaucratic collector can be fixed. It cannot be reformed. It must be thrown into history’s dust heap of failed legislative experiments and replaced with the Fair Tax Act of 2013, or HR 25/S 122.
The Fair Tax is a simple, fair and transparent national consumption tax that treats everyone the same — no loopholes, exemptions or exclusions — not even for Congress.
As such, this legislation represents the largest transfer of power back to the people since the writing of the Constitution.
And the Fair Tax is the only tax replacement plan with 85 cosponsors committed to disbanding, defunding and forever eliminating the IRS.
Benjamin Franklin once said, “the ordaining of laws in favor of one part of the nation, to the prejudice and oppression of another, is certainly the most erroneous and mistaken policy.”
It’s time to end the most prejudicial, oppressive, erroneous and mistaken policy ever forced upon the American people. It’s time for the Fair Tax. Steven L. Hayes is chairman and president of Americans For Fair Taxation.

No they aren't. They are too busy watching American Idol, Keeping up with the Kardashians, posting on Facebook, texting, etc,etc,etc.
Only a small percentage really give a sh!t about the IRS, and the lawlessness of these so-called leaders we have running our country into the ground.
Oh well, it was a great country while it lasted.

Amen. The government lied to the people from the beginning, promising that only the wealthiest would pay the income tax and it would never exceed 3% of anyone’s income. Foolishly, the gullible citizens believed the lie and their enslavement to Biig Government began.
But we have known for decades how this corrupt system has enriched the politically connected and crushed the Middle Class, forcing mothers into the workplace because government on all levels grabs 30% of the family income to enrich its cronies, while thousands of IRS employees have not paid income taxes for years. Why have we put up with this gross injustice?
The Founders would be so ashamed of this nation of bleating sheep.
I think you nailed it! In the past....it was something else but still something that distracted folk from the criminality of their own government.
The stupid thinking that originally thought a tax on income was inherently a good and decent thing......simply shows the caliber of folks who inhabit government edifices (both elected and hired).
This won’t happen with the current cabal in Congress. The reason the tax code is a mess is because members of Congress of both parties have used the tax code to reward special interest groups and now punish perceived enemies. Agree abolishing the current tax code is a good idea, but there are too many special interest groups in Washington with lots of money to give to allow reform to have any chance.
The purpose of the irs is to put into practice a massive transfer of money from those who earn it to those who vote for benefits.
The irs enforces an impossible tangle of laws, purposely made so complex that no one is capable of seeing where all the money goes, and comes from.
The tax laws create the illusion of tax breaks for some at the expense of others, with the result that individuals guard their breaks jealously, at the expense of others.
The irs is a massive beaurocracy, endowed with the power to place people in prison and to take all their money.
There is no appeal from the irs. The irs has infinite resources, time, and legal services to call upon. The individual can only hold on so long before going bankrupt.
The irs employs a huge number of people, all committed to the goal of taking money from those who earn it and giving it to those who vote the right way. At least half of irs employees are affirmative action hires - place holders, while the actual work is done by the other half.
The irs is an instrument of social engineering. The irs helps bring about social change by enforcing laws that are not about taxation.
If the irs were abolished, and all its employees were forced to find a real job, the wailing would be audible as far as the moon. But it would be worth it.
Of course the IRS can be fixed. Voters just need to start electing honest lawmakers to the federal government (cough, must be allergies).
Noting that much of the following material has been posted in related threads, patriots must wake up to major constitutional problems with the IRS. Starting at the beginning, the Founding States made the first numbered clauses in the Constitution, Sections 1-3 of Article I, to clarify that all federal legislative powers are vested in the elected members of Congress, not in the executive or judicial branches, or in non-elected bureaucrats like those running the IRS. So Congress has a constitutional monopoly on federal legislative powers whether it wants it or not.
And by delegating legislative / regulatory powers to non-elected third parties like the IRS, corrupt Congress is wrongly protecting the unconstitutional abuse of federal legislative powers from the wrath of the voters in blatant defiance of the statutes mentioned above imo.
Also, note that the Supreme Court has historically clarified limits on Congress's power to lay taxes. More specifically, Justice John Marshall had clarified that Congress is prohibited from laying taxes in the name of state power issues, essentially any issue which Congress cannot justify under its constitutional Article I, Section 8-limited powers.
“Congress is not empowered to tax for those purposes which are within the exclusive province of the States.” —Justice John Marshall, Gibbons v. Ogden, 1824.
The bottom line is that many citizens are now depending on constitutionally indefensible federal government services, services which should actually be operating only under state government authority.
As a side note concerning the federal government's constitutionally limited powers, please consider the following. The states would sure be a dull, boring place to grow up and live in if parents were to make sure that their children were taught about the federal government's constitutionally limited powers as the Founding States had intended for those powers to be understood. /sarc

In fact, forget about traditional salesman / sucker cliches like "buying the Brooklyn Bridge." Voters now have to deal with the problem that they have foolishly traded their votes for constitutionally nonexistent rights, federal spending programs and restrictive federal regulations which are based on constitutionally nonexistant federal government powers.
Never gonna happen. Too many money and power people involved.
However ... I agree.
A few flies in the ointment.
1. The only thing “fair” in life sells cotton candy and usually has a ferris wheel.
2. Changing to a “fair tax” still requires a tax collecting agency so the likelihood of abolishing the IRS is nil.
3. Unless the Constitution is amended, if a consumption tax (fair tax) law was passed and signed into law, the next session of Congress would have nothing preventing them from passing a new law bringing the income tax back and taxing us with both a consumption tax and an income tax and turning the consumption tax into a VAT (Value added) tax.
Just sayin.....

The article hints at, but does not clearly state, the biggest obstacle to getting rid of the IRS. The power that the IRS gives Congress is enormous and getting bigger.
The most recent IRS, politically driven, scandals are but the tip of the iceberg.
IMHO, the very moment that it became obvious that what was going on the Federal Court System and Congress should have closed the IRS lock stock and barrel. The fact that this didn’t happen shows the depth of the problem.
Will we ever get to the Fair Tax, a concept that’s been around for 20 plus years? Not hardly pilgrim. And the reason why it is impossible has been clearly demonstrated over the last several months.

I will not even consider any candidate for President who is not unequivocally in favor of repealing the 16th amendment.
The income tax needs to be abolished and replaced with NOTHING but what our Founders intended.
Our rep Rob Woodall is a former aide of John Linder who wrote one of the major fair tax proposals. He is actively working for it.
