Whatever Happened To…Manly Virtues
Coach is Right ^ | 7/17/14 | Michael D. Shaw

Virtue: A habitual and firm disposition to do the good. Cardinal virtues are prudence, justice, fortitude, and temperance. Traditional male virtues are strength, courage, independence, heroism in combat, and sexual initiative.

For many years, Jesus has been portrayed as a Galilean flower child, walking around the countryside being nice, preaching love and peace, and having a thing for Mary Magdalene. Somehow, this easygoing hippie runs afoul of the corrupt power structure, and ends up dying with career criminals, under horrible circumstances.

Of course, even a casual reading of the Gospels reveals something far different. If anything, Jesus is a confrontational, in-your-face young rebel, more than eager to match wits with the best and brightest, and not afraid to get physical (as in clearing the Temple). Although he can be very kind and forgiving, he spends a good portion of his time calling people names and warning them that they are headed straight to Hell. In short, nice guys and flower children don’t get crucified.

But, this true picture flies in the face of how current convention views the ideal man. Much damage has been done by the assault on male virtues, but where did this revisionism come from?

Would you believe politics?

Allow me to connect the dots...

What happened is that the idea that you had to earn values became offensive, and the idea that people are entitled to values gained strength (pushed, no doubt, by those who had no hope of earning any). Raise a few generations who believe such tripe and the current trend is what you end up with.

“Manly virtues” are sexist and judgmental.

I’m good, although occasionally pushing the envelope on the temperance thing.

“Manly virtues” require effort & sacrifice, and when popular culture became saturated in feminism and devalued and stigmatized traditional manliness, a lot of guys said ‘fine now I won’t bother’.

I wonder how many here are old enough to remember when the word to describe male behavior in WASP America was “masculine” and the Latino word “macho” was used to describe the phony, overt, hyper male behavior famous among Latins, and Hispanics, and then feminism started, and male behavior started being mocked as “macho” behavior.

John Wayne and Jimmy Stewart were masculine.

“Pick any contemporary issue, and chances are you’ll find destroyed male virtue—and loss of cardinal virtues—as a root cause.

Illegitimacy—What’s easier, being a strong man supporting your family, or just knocking her up and running off?

Chemical dependency—Whatever happened to temperance? Who cares? There’s a government sponsored treatment program to bail you out any time and as many times as you need it.

Failing public schools—No more strength, courage, or heroism to stand up to the social engineers. Where is that high school principal willing to kick out the troublemakers and stare down the bureaucrats?

Crime—Only possible without prudence and justice

Poverty and welfare abuse—Thrive without independence, strength, and fortitude”

When men stop being men and pretend to be women society falls apart. The responsible, moral, upstanding man who provides for his family and supports his country is now looked on as at best a sap and a fool.

He is often called a threat and a hindrance to the new politically correct, totalitarian society.

For any man who is exploring this topic, I'd recommend Jack Donovan's
The Way of Men, and his other writings.

Not everywhere but...

Fatherhood replaced by government welfare.
Self and home defense replaced by 911 and gun control laws.
Competitive sports in elementary and high school replaced with “must have girls” on the team.
Church membership mocked and ridiculed by pop culture.
All gay all the time in the military and pop culture
A petulant whining possibly gay president who worships the man in the mirror.
Young women giving it up in the hookup culture.
Brutal family court system.
Assumption of guilt in the legal system
Confiscatory taxes

The emasculation of American men did not start with politicians seeking the women's vote; rather, the politicians who have warred on traditional male roles, have been misled by what is best described as an egalitarian Academic/Media complex, that has succeeded in shifting the perception of those influenced by the verbal arts, radically to the Left.

Both Communism (egalitarian collectivism) and other forms of Socialism, are in various grades of denial of the basic differences between men & women, as well as the basic differences in all of us, in terms of personality, aptitudes, motivations, etc..

Of course, any healthy human society depends upon sex roles--the differences between men & women, on which the continuity of human life, depends, and from which most human happiness is derived. The politicians who have embraced the Feminist delusion, are merely parroting the egalitarian fallacies that have arisen in the academic world, and been given currency by a dumbed down journalism.

For more analysis, see Feminist Delusion.

Finally ..!!!!!!

I’ve always believed in the strong, full of courage Jesus. Not, as you said, the silly, flower child.

Jesus also confronted the Pharisees, calling them “vipers” (Matt 23:33 Amp). Flower children don’t do that.

In fact, I always thought His statements were on purpose. After that public confrontation, the Pharisees continued plotting to kill Him.

Chapter 23 of Matthew shows how Jesus totally took the Scribes and Pharisees apart. It’s great!

I just finished reading a book about John Wayne. There was a part where he was at a party, called Kirk Douglas over to the side and chewed him out for playing the part of Vincent Van Gogh in a movie, something like:

“Jesus Christ, Kirk...there aren’t that many of us left! You can’t be playing the parts of weak, pansy f*****ts!” (or something close to that)

The “feminist movement” had a lot to do with it. Men were shown in commercials and on TV programs to be wimpy; wishy-washy; unable to make good decisions. It was the feminization of males. Fortunately, some survived.

Then, they used the brute; over-bearing; brawling; lying, etc. type of males and made the implication that all men were like these. Absurd ..!!

TODAY, I see commercial after commercial about little girls acting smarter than their fathers; showing the fathers didn’t have the sense God gave a goose. While this might occasionally be true, I don’t like the seeds these types of commercials are planting in the minds of our young ladies.

If you want to stop it .. just start a letter writing campaign to some of these advertisers; and be sure you keep track of the program you were watching when you saw the commercial.

Wow .. that’s very interesting (if true); but I’d be curious to find out what parts Kirk played after that comment from John.

“Men were shown in commercials and on TV programs to be wimpy; wishy-washy; “

There is an ATT commercial on that drives me nuts. It has a group of realtors, four or five women and one man.

The man is a pathetic caricature, the woman all strong.

Pathetic.

Oh yes, I hate that commercial too.

The one with a little girl who tells her father to listen to some other adult about changing insurance. I think it’s Allstate (but I haven’t seen it for awhile).

One of the latest is a little boy who questions his dad about his broker. Amazing!
