Last week, Michigan became the latest of a handful of states to officially raise its minimum wage this year, with a gradual four-year phase-in that will take its floor from $7.40 up to $9.25 an hour — but over in the city of Seattle, things just got real. Say hello to what will soon become the highest minimum wage in the nation, via the AP:

The issue has dominated politics in the liberal municipality for months. Mayor Ed Murray, who was elected last year, had promised in his campaign to raise the minimum wage to $15 an hour. A newly elected socialist City Council member had pushed the idea as well.

“This legislation sends a message heard around the world: Seattle wants to stop the race to the bottom in wages and that we deplore the growth in income inequality and the widening gap between the rich and the poor,” Councilmember Tom Rasmussen said...

I’m glad this is confined at the city level. The people of Seattle are punishing themselves. Too bad they are a bunch of stupid liberals and won’t learn from their pain. I bet they will asking for another increase in the not too distant future.

This will be very interesting to watch from a distance. I wonder how many of the Union Contracts both Public and Private have a clause relating their wages to the Minimum Wage?

If so they good people of Seattle are about to receive a lesson in how Taxes must rise, (Property, Sales, and whatevers) to pay for the increases in wages, etc.

Why not just pay everyone as much as Bill Gates and Warren Buffett? That will close the gap for everyone.

Libs just don’t get it.

How long will it be before some lib starts moaning about the loss of minimum wage jobs? How could this happen?

I’m surprised they beat Portland, Berkeley, San Francisco and Austin to the punch.

Any guesses on how long it will take for businesses to start their move out of Seattle to a more business-friendly city or state? Mayor Murray and city council, I hope you are prepared for the catastrophe that is about to overcome you once great city.

“Well, just look at it as a lab experiment and see what happens.”

I encourage all who are unemployed, lack any marketable skills, and have room temp IQ’s to relocate to Seattle. Those who don’t wish to work should relocate to Detroit where there’s lots of juicy benefits and free housing available. There! Now that the deck has been cleared everyone else can get back to work....

If you do the quick math in your head... After about a year of this, there’s going to be a whole lot less people doing a whole more. Most of the people who had jobs paying less than the new minimum wage, won’t have jobs. Most of the people who made more than the minimum wage, will have their pay cut and workloads increased.

They just increased the cost of an unskilled full-time employee to $36-$40,000, before benefits. I see LOTS of automation in their future.

What’s funny is that here in Texas the minimum wage is the federally-mandated $7.25 an hour, yet hardly anyone is forced to work for that because our economy is humming along like a Swiss watch. The market is taking care of it.

If there’s any rational argument against $50/hr then it applies to $15/hr. if there is no such argument then make it $1,500/hr.

around here that order costs about 7.35 with tax...

I’d bet it’ll be 15.50 if the min wage here went up to 15 hour..
