Basic premise of this paper: 1. lets take fish out of their natural ocean environment, 2. put em in a tank where they are stressed, 3. crank up the temperature, 4. see if any fish die, 5. count dead fish, 6. assume natural adaptation is impossible 7. report news of future doom to the world via press release.
Via Eurekalert: According to an international team of researchers, the rapid pace of climate change is threatening the future presence of fish near the equator. Our studies found that one species of fish could not even survive in water just three degrees Celsius warmer than what it lives in now, says the lead author of the study, Dr Jodie Rummer from the ARC Centre of Excellence for Coral Reef Studies at James Cook University.
Dr Rummer and her colleagues studied six common species of fish living on coral reefs near the equator. She says many species in this region only experience a very narrow range of temperatures over their entire lives, and so are likely adapted to perform best at those temperatures.
This means climate change places equatorial marine species most at risk, as oceans are projected to warm by two to three degrees Celsius by the end of this century.

Comments are hilarious ranging from technical (mass of oceans make it impossible for that temperature rise to occur [earth would be unlivable if so - equivalent of setting off 400 atomic bombs per second]) to recipes for fish (Fish, in 350F oil, covered with a nice tempura batter, will not survive). Overwhelming sentiment of those commenting: but never underestimate these guys. The desperation continues to show.
Boiled Fish
Globull warming alarmist would have you believe that the earth’s temperature has NEVER, EVER been higher than it is right now, which is of course BS.
This is like a weak science fair project in junior high school.
Duh, have “Equator Fish” lost the ability to swim towards cooler water?
Some Wacko is trying to get funding to study Australia reef.
They did the same thing with “Coral Bleaching” back in the ‘90s and “Discovered” the reef has natural cycles.
They will swim off elsewhere ...
Most Fish used to warm water have a hard time in cold water.. most/many die..
BUT..... fish used to cold water mostly can survive in warmer water..
probably the same with mammals.. and insects.... and reptiles..
Takes more giddyup to survive in cold weather.. than in warm..
UNLESS yer talking a desert.. then the reverse is true.. (mostly)...
What did these poor sensitive fish do 10,000 years ago during the last Ice Age?
"..good, ship them up here, we're tired of penguins"
Alternate reality PING!
Fishcicles
mistressmagoo says:And I always thought that the temperature of the ocean reduced with depth. I must be wrong because the fish would swim down a few inches if the water seemed too warm for them as they have no doubt done for millions of years. Never mind. These scientists are very clever people much cleverer than fish.
That might be true if the change was very rapid.
However they talk about a century for the change.
The species should adapt to slowly changing temperatures up or down, thru generations of breeding. -Tom
You gotta love Science! It says that a fish can turn into a frog which can turn into a monkey which can turn into a human, but a fish can’t adapt enough to survive a 3 degree temperature change.
Unfortunately, I lost a whole tank of RCS due to a malfunctioning heater (it was ON the whole time).
Sad, but it’s a whole different story.
Similar scientific method, let’s transplant these researchers to Mercury (the planet). They can continue their research on climate change there.
I guess these gray whales are just going for the tacos and cerveza
"Daddy, I turned the little knob..."
Of course had I cranked the dial one tenth of a degree each year from the time I was three until I was 28, I think the fish would have expired in their normal course.
Fish can’t swim away?
